Google Android G1 Unlocking and using with Fido
A friend of mine brought me a new toy - A Google G1 phone. First thing, I contacted my friends at Horizon Wireless and they provided me an unlock code in minutes and very cheap.
Then I opened the unit, put in my Fido card and booted it up. It asked for the unlock code, which worked like a charm.
During activation, it fails first, as it won't connect to Internet (yet). Before hitting the Try Again, hit Menu button to go into APN Settings, hit menu again to add a new one. Use the following:
# Name: Fido
# APN: internet.fido.ca
# Username: fido
# Password: fido
# MCC: 302
# MNC: 37
Or if you are using Rogers, use:
# Name: Rogers
# APN: internet.com
# Username: wapuser1
# Password: wap
# MCC: 302
# MNC: 72
Click Menu and save. Now go back and try again. This time it will work like a charm. Kudos goes to Horizon Wireless for excellent service. Check them out for your unlocking needs, they are great.

I have a T-mobile G1 Android. My phone is unlocked and I've input the proper network settings I can surf the web but for some reason i can't send mms messages. I'm based out of Montreal Canada and desperately need to resolve this problema.
The network settings above are correct except for the
MNC which is actually 370 on the Fido Network, however I believe the error is somewhere in the mmsc:
Can someone with some knowledge shed light on my dilema?

Fido MMS settings are:
MMS SETTINGS :
APN : mms.fido.ca
IP address : 205.151.11.13
User name : fido
PW: fido
Server address : http://mms.fido.ca
I haven't tried them on a G1, but it works fine on other devices.

1) Can I activate an unlocked G1 with a Fido Pre-paid SIM card?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I haven't used any prepaid fido cards, but as long as they allow surfing the net, you should be fine.

I tried the APN for rogers above but it didn't work. I'm still getting the error "There is a problem communicating with the google servers."
I got the cheap 2mb data plan just to connect for the moment and think this might be why. I tried asking to get the iphone data plan but the rep said he needs the serial number or IMEI of the iphone. What can i do to fix this???

Your data plan might be using a different APN. Try using wap.com as APN (rest same). Also you can try to leave user/pass empty.

Usually, most carriers identify Mobile Browsing as wap browsing on a regular mobile phone, where as Mobile Internet is for smartphones. You should of course check with the carrier to make sure.

just a additional info for the fido parts up there,
if you are using new fido simcard, try putting MNC:370 instead of 37

Hi i got my phone and its unlocked but i dont see the 3g logo all i see is a edge service
Posted by Tony (email) on 4/28/2009 3:00:00 AM
Depending on your location/carrier, it is normal. It only supports 1700/2100 mhz for 3G and for example in Canada Rogers/Fido only supports 850 and 1900.

I was looking at an unlocked t-mobile unit (dev) - I have a fido account with data turned off (they refused to give me data with my old "great' plan without extending to a new plan - and I won't do that) but want to use the g1 for wifi google/web ( gmail, igoogle, web) usage since 90% of my life is in wifi hotspots (university/home). Will this work with fido? Can I do all andriodish things via the wifi when I have wifi access ( so no edge/3g).
You help is appreciated

It should work fine, almost anything you can do with a 3G connection, you can do with wifi.

Proper thing to do is to return it to authorities. Otherwise, you can try a hard reset.
