Samsung i600 Windows Mobile 6 upgrade - Part 3
If you are one of those people who needs to have their upgrade now and don't want wait for Samsung to release it for your country or your country is not listed, you can change your current WM5 firmware to generic, then to a country that is listed on the WM6 upgrade pages (http://www.samsungmobile.com/promotion/i600/index.jsp)
The details are listed
here.
The process in short is:
1. Download and install no brand firmware from http://wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Samsung_i600#Latest_Official_ROM_Downloads (first you will need Active Sync 4.5 and modem drivers from the file installed, then run upgrade)
2. Switch phone to Netherlands
- type on phone *#1546792*# (or run hidden program in WindowsAdminSettings.exe) to get to admin settings menu
- chose option "Preconfiguration"
- type password: *#81230*#
- select country: Netherlands
- select operator: Vodafone
3. Download and install WM6 upgrade. (see http://www.sems.org/entry.asp?ENTRY_ID=254 for download links)

No, this will fry the i607, the chipset is different. The WM6 ROM from AT&T has leaked several weeks ago. If you need a copy let me know. You can find the links at howardforums.com and other sites.

Name and md5 checksums match. So you are good to go.
I compared the file with the one I got from another place, both file sizes was: 86,667,091 bytes,
the MD5 checksum is: bbd40142da0dff218d132d2d3bc33301
(Created MD5 via Total Commander (www.ghisler.com))

Whenever I try and upgrade to the generic software the upgrader never finds the device. I have upgraded to activesync 4.5 and have the modem drivers installed. Any idea why this could be happening?

I am guessing you are running XP? If you are running Vista, I highly recommend using a XP box, as firmware upgrades with Vista is tricky.

thanks very much.
If I put this on UK phone, is there any issue with keyboard mappings or language or would it all be fine ?

Language will be English for sure, but I can't say anything about keyboard mappings. But if I recall correctly, you can always change keyboard mappings via registry.

do you know if this update also unlocks (simwise) the phone?
Posted by Steve (email) on 9/22/2007 3:00:00 AM
To my knowledge, SIM unlock has nothing to do with this update. You'll have to unlock it separately.

Doesn't work for my i600 as it only gives Arab, Turkey, or Default. (The phone was bought in Kuiwait). So far I have had no luck in tracking down anyone helpful at Samsung to see if there is an upgrade to WM6 coming. Any ideas how I might achieve the upgrade without bricking the phone?
Cheers.

Have you checked the Modaco forums link posted in the article? There might be someone else with same rom as you have and might be able to help.
