Unleash the power of your Siemens Speedstream 6520

Digg This

I have been using a Siemens Speedstream 6520 for my DSL connection from Bell for over a year. I found that the options in the router's interface somewhat limited. It turns out Bell has crippled the interface, disabling many options, such as Dynamic DNS support. I couldn't find a Siemens original firmware to upload but I found a solution.

Apparently, the options are still there, but Bell used a different home page hiding these options. All you need is some HTML magic.

Download these files, extract them to any folder and edit them. Both show router IP as 192.168.2.1, edit it to match your router. Then open index.htm via IE, Firefox, or your favorite web browser and voila. You'll see whole option list on the left side.

As a test, I enabled Dynamic DNS support and it worked like a charm. Happy surfing :)

I can try to help, once I can understand what you mean.

- Have you started the firmware upgrade?
(My post does not require any new firmware or upgrades!)

- "my router lost the signal like a normal modem" - Lost what signal? DSL?

Hi - any ideas on how to unlock a speedstream from a previous ISP?

I'm trying to get it working with my new ISP, but its been blocked by the previous ISP and won't allow me to enter the ISP info.

Resetting doesn't work as the isps software is still there.

Thanks

Posted by com on 11/6/2007 3:00:00 AM

If you can get a hold of the unbranded or firmware for your new ISP, you should be able to flash it to the unit. That should fix your problem.

I have been given a Speeddtream 6520 by a friend who just moved to the states and i have lost contact with him for while.
I have tryed to connect it but it comes up with his log on still. I dont know his pass word.
Is there anyway i can unlock it and use it on the Optus net on my account.
Also i have a non wireless modem at the moment so i will have to install from the start.
Can anyone please help me?
Thankyou.

You can hard reset the unit, by using a paper clip, then hook a pc to it and set it up to your liking. See the user manual for details (http://www.siemens.com/page/1,3771,1272700-1-999_0_0-9,01.html)

Instead of repeating what you wrote, can you please elaborate Kenneth?

First, why are you upgrading the firmware? Second, if I understand correctly, wireless features are not working, the rest is ok? Did you try a hard reset/reset to defaults?

Posted by Sems on 12/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

hey there,

im trying to use an old speedstream 6520 as a repeater.
let me elaborate...

i have two routers
i have a wireless network on the first level of my house sent out by router1
i have an xbox on the second floor of my house
i want router2 to receive the signal from router1 and repeat it so i can the xbox to router2 via ethernet

any ideas on how i can do this??

i know with some linksys routers its pretty easy, i may rummage around and see if i have one, but i would love to use this speedstream

thanks

Posted by aaronhb (email) on 1/8/2008 3:00:00 AM

I no longer have a Speedstream router at hand, so I don't know if it can work in bridge mode. Like you have said, it is pretty easy with a Linksys, esp. with WRT54G and a custom firmware like dd-wrt. I have several bridges working. You can check its Wireless options, it may support it. In the worst possible scenario, you can get a WRT54G really cheap.

Posted by Sems on 1/8/2008 3:00:00 AM

yeah i guess i could get one...

i did find an extra linksys BEFW11S4...

any idea if that works??

thanks

aaron

Not to my knowledge, but you can check dd-wrt.com pages.

I don't know if this the correct way to ask for help here but at this piont I will try anything. I have been fighting with Bell for about 3 weeks about my Internet going up and down. I currently have a Speedstream 6520 and I have been saving the log files from the Route and trying like hell to get someone at Bell just to look at them and tell me what if they can shed any light on the problem.

How could I attach a save log file so someone could look at it for me. Many Thanks.

Posted by Brent Moore (email) on 1/21/2008 3:00:00 AM

There is no option to attach files to comments. However, you can email the logs to me, at sems at sems dot org or you can post it to dslreports.com forums. There is plenty of guys there that can help you out as well.

Hi,
I have the same situation with a Siemens 6520 which now I want to use with other ISP than Bell.
Are these files useful to unlock the modem?
How should I 'edit' them? which software should I use?
How could I load my new username and password into the modem and then be able to use the wireless section of the modem ?
I appreciate a lot your help.
RPB

Posted by RPB (email) on 3/4/2008 3:00:00 AM

Can't help you much to unlock the modem, as I never did it, while I had the modem I used it to access features not listed by default interface. There might be options there to change user/pass, but I no longer have the modem, so I can't verify it.

Posted by Sems on 3/4/2008 3:00:00 AM

Downloaded your htm coding and it works like a charm. I was wondering if there was a way to force set the date & time on the 6520. I have the time zone/time server stuff set; but it won't find a time server for some reason. Is there a way to point it at a different time server, or manually enter the info?

Posted by Joe Blow on 3/19/2008 3:00:00 AM

Since I no longer have the unit, I can't check it out. Is the NTP server greyed out or not editable?

You can check the forums at dslreports.com, someone there might be able to assist as well.

Posted by Sems on 3/19/2008 3:00:00 AM

Hi,
I found the way to unlock the Modem Siemens 6520 in Siemens Aussie site. They have a firmware update to download, it's a .exe file which should be run having the modem connected to the computer through Ethernet.... just one click and it's done ! pretty easy ! Now it's no longer restricted to Bell.

Posted by RPB (email) on 3/29/2008 3:00:00 AM

Cool, it is good to know :)

Posted by Sems on 3/30/2008 3:00:00 AM

I have a speedstream 6520 that i converted to bridge mode (by changing the ip addy to 10.0.0.1) and I now want to access the router to check my line stats etc. Any idea how I can go about that with telnet? I don't want to convert it back to router mode if I don't have to. If I do have to convert it back, how do I go about doing it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Posted by indedarktoo (email) on 4/13/2008 3:00:00 AM

Even in bridged mode, web interface should be accessible, you'll simply have to plug in a computer to one of the switch ports and manually assign IP. Similarly, you can telnet into the box, but I don't know which commands exist in it. And I no longer have the box, so I cannot check it out.

Posted by Sems on 4/13/2008 3:00:00 AM

Thank you for your help... I will try it and get back to you.

Anyone knows how to get the detail modem status info of 6520 which is locked by bell please?

Posted by BigD (email) on 4/17/2008 3:00:00 AM

Did you try the files I posted?

Posted by Sems on 4/17/2008 3:00:00 AM

Thanks Sems. Yes, I tried but couldn't find the Modem Status.
I need something like this

Modem Status
Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 512
Ds Rate (Kbps) 5056
US Margin 6
DS Margin 24
Trained Modulation ADSL_G.dmt
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 5
US Line Attenuation 20
Peak Cell Rate 1207 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 0
CRC Tx Fast 0
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 4
Path Mode Interleaved

when people talk about their modem status they always post their status like that.

Thanks Again

If u want to get rid of ur Bell Sympatico settings and unlock your SpeedStream 6520 to use it with a other DSL internet provider. Download a firmware from there :
https://bigpond.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bigpond.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=12383&p_sid=ZPZM*B1j&p_lva=12492
Or to directly download the file
http://www.bigpond.com/res/images/helpcenterFAQs/Update_E752_AF5_106-71_a056_v1s.exe

I had a error @ the end of the installation of the firmware . But it still worked for me . I closed the error window and and logged to the router Ip and the Bell Sympatico interface was gone i entered my new settings of the new provider(Acanac) and it worked.

Posted by X on 4/18/2008 3:00:00 AM

BigD, could it be that this modem does not have such a page/option?

Posted by Sems on 4/20/2008 3:00:00 AM

Hi X, thank you for the info, I am with Acanca too, I will give it a try.

Sems, seems 6520 with Bell firmware doesn't have the option.

Thanks guys.

Can you please post the link of the firmware you used? Thanks

BigD ... did you get it to work ?

I've tried the firmware ... still can't get to login to my speedstream ... 192.168.2.1 ... still get an error page (404)

I've switched to Distributel ...

All I want to do with the speedstream is use it as a router ... not as a modem !

anyway ... any ideas !

We have a Speedstream 6520 on Bell. I'm not sure if I ever had the user name and password to log in, but in any case, I don't have it now. Can I set a new one?

Thanks

Posted by Andy Strote (email) on 9/4/2008 3:00:00 AM

You can do couple things.

1. Try the default user/password, it should be in its documentation.

2. Hard reset the unit, this should also reset the user/password. Then try step 1.

Posted by Sems on 9/6/2008 3:00:00 AM

Nice that Siemens has nothing on the US/Canada site to help us.
BTW, the default password/user ID is admin/admin in case anyone needs to get inside the Bell stuff.

I too am trying to crack the Bell firmware and use it for my new ISP (Yak), and it feels like I'm in the movie "Mission Impossible"!

Posted by Oblio (email) on 9/20/2008 3:00:00 AM

Siemens Europe or Australia might have a firmware. It's been a long time, so I don't recall which.

Hi,
I'm having troubles configuring a Siemens 6520. When i use your page, i still have the Bell crap on the main frame. And the problem is that i can't install the proper siemens firmware because i'm on a mac and this thing only comes for windows...
any idea that could help me ?

Posted by embali on 10/27/2008 3:00:00 AM

Bell crap will be on the main frame, but on the left frame you should have a lot of options that is not available on regular Bell firmware.

As for flashing, why don't you use Paralels or VMWare Fusion and install Windows on virtual machine and then flash it? Another idea is taking the router to a friend and flashing it there.

Hi, everyone:

I tried to update firmware from bigpond.com

I follow the instructions, nothing happened, software utility stays sitting there for ages to initialize.

I tried to upgrade from two different laptop/PCs, using three different cables, and tried all 4 ports.

I downloaded software on two different PCs to eliminate the possibility that the firmware might have corrupted.

Thanks ahead for any advise.

BTW,I also tried the file from link below:

Same thing, it just keep looking for device no matter how I connected the modem.

Any indea?

I no longer have a 6510, but could it be a different hardware revision? I know in time they release newer versions with same model number and it might be your issue.

Posted by Sems on 12/4/2008 3:00:00 AM

Finally made it with my old T60 which runs on XP. Maybe Vista is the problem. ;>)

I avoid Vista, if possible, when I am upgrading anything :)

I hope this note will help save someone else some time:

Have speedstream 6520. After firmware update from: http://www.modemsupport.com.au/Update_E752_AEY_106-65_1210_v1r_1437102.zip

Immediately after firmware update, could no longer connect to my isp.

Followed instructions here: http://www.forums.bell.ca/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=118&p=902

Back on the internet!

Detailed notes:
I'm in Toronto, ON, Canada, so I should have guessed that firmware from NZ or Australia might cause me some problems. Turns out that after the firmware update, the default virtual circuit settings (for establishing the PPPoE connection) were values that my ISP was not expecting. Specifically, VCI was set to 8, which my isp was expecting to be 0.

Why did I upgrade firmware?
speedstream 6520 was originally provided by Bell, when I switched isps, they never asked for it back, so I continued using it with my new isp (teksavvy). After 15 months of use, I started randomly being redirected to a bell page saying my username was invalid. I called my isp to ask about this, they said that it was the router that was actually doing the redirect - this must have been some subroutine in the firmware that just never kicked in before. I upgraded to the firmware above to knock out this frustrating redirect behaviour.

Phew! Hope that helps.

Hi Guys,
I desperately want to set up my Speedstream 6520 as a wireless
bridge and came across your forum answer that you have set it up as as
a bridge by changing the IP to 10.0.0.1. Here is my scenario please
tell me if your system means the router can do this:

I have two routers
i have a wireless network on the first level of my house sent out by router1
i have an xbox/VOIP telephone on the SECOND LEVEL of my house
i want router2 the SPEEDSTREAM 6520 to receive the signal from router1
and repeat it so i can connect the xbox to the 6520 via the ethernet
ports

any ideas on how i can do this??

Thanks,
izad

Posted by Izad (email) on 12/14/2008 3:00:00 AM

Thanks w.g for the steps, I am sure it will come handy for some users.

Izad, I never used the 6520 as a bridge, and as written in above comments, I no longer have the unit, so I can't look at the options.

Hello there,

Thank you for the lovely method on editing everything you uploaded to work around the router. I am currently having a problem, and that is in the editing process. I am very unexperienced at HTML, I barely know some things. I just wanted to know how the process works exactly. I wanted to know what files to edit, and how it is supposed to happen. I entered the IP for the router in the NAV file, and saved it. Nothing happened after that, as I still can't get the extra options on my router. I would really appreciate the help, thank you.

Moe

Posted by Moe (email) on 1/10/2009 3:00:00 AM

For example, if your router's IP is 10.0.0.1

You need to edit:

<frame name="main" src="http://192.168.2.1/" noresize>

In index.htm to

<frame name="main" src="http://10.0.0.1/" noresize>

And edit nav.htm

var ip = "192.168.2.1"; // Put the IP address of your router here

To

var ip = "10.0.0.1"; // Put the IP address of your router here

You can find your router IP by going to command prompt (Start Menu - Run - type in cmd, click ok) and entering ipconfig at the command prompt. Default Gateway should point to your router's IP.

Hello,
I have a Siemens 6520 Speedstream modem supplied by Bell Sympatico. The Part number on the device is 060-N651-A15 and Firmware Part Number is 004-E752-AG7.
My question is related to the Firewall that comes with the 6520 and if it is enabled by Bell Sympatico by default.
As noted above, Bell Sympatico hides some of the menu items are are available to the end user, which include the Firewall setting. When I first loaded the HTML files and selected Firewall Level it was set to OFF. Does this mean that the Firewall has been turned OFF all this time? Is this the default setting for Bell Sympatico supplied 6520s?

I tried called Bell Symmpatico technical support and they first indicated that I needed to set the DMZ in order to turn the firewall on. (Yea Right!) Then the supervisor came on the call to indicate that the 6520 did not come with a Firewall. This could be more believable if they have turned the Firewall off by default?
But then I called sales about their Home Networking Package which includes "security services". Once they knew I had a 6520, they indicated that device already has a Firewall and it is on by default.

So you can understand my confusion since even Bell Sympatico Helpless Desk does not even know their own products.

Confused 6520 owner...

Posted by Chris (email) on 3/16/2009 3:00:00 AM

Chris, follow the instruction from w.g. dated 12/11/2008 here. Download the firmware, go to the other forum thread and add Bell's ATM circuit config. Got everything working without a problem. You can only update the modem's firmware via ethernet cable connection. After updating the firmware, the default modem/router ip is 192.168.254.254 instead of Bells 192.168.2.1.

As I am also new to this 'old' modem, I see that it only supports WPA-TKIP, not WPA-AES (more secure). Also I am not sure how good is it's firewall capabilities. So I might end up use it as a dumb modem....

btw, does anyone know how the lan/wan port work? You can configure it somehow... anyone?

I bought in 2006 a SpeedStream Router, which I installed it for InterNet Access.

I never used my Wireless connectivity. Recently I bought a laptop, tried to connect through Wireless but it's not working.

My Router is 6520, I did the reset steps and re-configured the steps with an Etisalat Customer Service Representative. My WAN is working now and the Wireless light is workig but still can't connect from my laptop or any other laptop through Wireless.

Please Help me and tell me how I work in my Wireless based to be protected, I don't wanna make it unsecure, you know people can connect to my intenet and make it slower in case it's unsecured. So I need to fix it and meanwhile to set up a WEP key.

Chris, it has been long time since I got rid of Bell's DSL, but if it said firewall is off, then firewall was off all that time. During the programming of the router, something could have messed up at Bell's end, who knows.

Xs, from my DSL experience, I found the best option is to use the modem as a modem and then use a router connected to it, such as a Linksys, for firewall and other options. I don't recall what was the procedure, but you can switch a DSL modem into "bridged mode" and let the router do the routing/connecting to dsl, etc.

Kwiz, most of the time first thing to do is to disable all wireless security during testing and see if that works. Then you can set a WEP or better WPA key to protect it. I highly recommend reading the modem's user guide/manual.

ive checked out http://www.modemsupport.com.au/index.html

Alright, I have a 6520 here, and I just reset it. connected to it I have my computer in LAN port 2 and the ethernet from my cable modem in port 1.

I want the signal from the cable modem to be sent to my 6520 to be broadcast wirelessly, and also sent to my computer.

How the hell do I go about doing this?

Posted by Kyle (email) on 7/16/2009 3:00:00 AM

Francis, I believe you need to just do the firmware upgrade. To make sure, I'd suggest checking dslreports.com and other sites, as here in Canada we do not have ADSL and ADSL2 differentiation.

Kyle, I'd highly recommend using a standard wifi router, instead of a modem + router for your home networking. I never tried to combine a DSL modem + wireless router with a cable modem.

Posted by Sems on 7/16/2009 3:00:00 AM

Has anyone ever had what seems to be a limit to the number of wireless connections on this modem/router?

I can't get more than two of my wireless computers going at one time. I have 3 computers with wireless cards, and I have successfully connected all of them to the wireless network at different times, but never more than two at one time. The third one to try and connect always fails and can't connect unless one of the other two computers is turned off or goes to sleep.

Posted by Stuart on 7/27/2009 3:00:00 AM

Jaymitt, I haven't used 6520 for any wireless connection, as I already had a wireless ap on my network, so can't help there.

Stuart, simply reset the unit to factory defaults, use the files I provide and you can reprogram it to your ISP's settings.

Does anybidy know of Firmware that will use 0/35 for the VPI/VCI? The Update_E752_AF5_106-71_a056_v1s.exe sets it to 8/35.
