Howto: Run Skype 2.1 on Windows Mobile Smartphones
One of my readers, Jan, has reminded me that Skype 2.1 is out and asked if it would be possible to run it on a Smartphone, like Imate SP5. I no longer have the SP5, but I have a Motorola Q, which is very similar. So I took the challenge and the verdict: IT WORKS :)
This entry can be used in almost all latest Windows Mobile 5 Smartphones.
I fired up the MagicCab, a cab extraction utility by Inventop, to extract the files and registry. While MagicCab worked fine with Beta version of Skype 2.1 cab, it didn't open the final release. I found a new freeware utility, MSCEInf and worked like a charm to extract files and registry.
There is two groups, one goes under \Storage Card\Program Files\Skype, the other goes to \Windows. I then created a .reg file to import with the details. The full setup steps are:
1. Copy the files to proper locations. The file can be downloaded at here
2. You will need a registry editor, PHM Registry Editor or I used Resco Explorer's Registry addon and imported the .reg file (go to the folder you copied the reg file via File Explorer or Resco Explorer 2003, click to execute and import it.
3. Reboot the device.
4. Run the Skype using the link. On the long license agreement page, to click agree, I had to scroll all the way to the bottom. When the cursor was blinking at the last line, I clicked one more time the down button and hit the center button to click agree and continue. There is one more warning page, where you'll need to use the center button to continue. Then the rest is straightforward.
Post a comment if you get stuck :)

Thanks Sem, it seems to work fine. One thing, if you had had any of the previous versions of Skype installed, dont forget to go into rootfolder \Application Data\ and delete the old Skype folder before you run 2.1 for the first time otherwise it wont run properly.
Still havn't figured out how to save things on the settings page since there is no scrollbar.. Could this data reside in the registry somewhere??
cheers

It could be in the registry. You can export the registry fully before making changes on a Pocket PC and then make some and compare. I am out of office now, I can try over the weekend.

If you have the time it would be great, I dont have a PPC to test with.

It looks like, it is saving to the XML files in Application Data folder. However, since the content is encrypted, it is hard to find what is what. The interesting thing is on my Q, under Settings, many pull down options are empty, wherein on a Pocket PC, they are filled. So, we might be missing something in setup.

Help! I was able to do all of the procedures except drop the reg file in. Where do I place it on the SDA and how do I access it and execute it so that the registry edits are made. I have PHM regedit.

Got it working on my Dash but can't see the dialpad anywhere - other than that with overclocking - it works very well!!
So, can anyone help me with the dialpad bit?

I have been hesitant to still spend the new $14.95 for unlim calling; but much more comfy to split with that money now after just testing Skype 2.2 Beta for Windows Mobile --just released at http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/downloading_smart_beta.html
Yes a few flaws, but they know about them and a fix should be up. It works and thats what matters. I am in love with this form of convergence extended now to the mobile devices.

Can I use this technic to install skype 2.2 on my ipaq 510 voice messenger ???

Actually now that there is actually a Smartphone version of Skype, you don't need this technic. Simply download the Smartphone version from skype web site and you are good to go

Hi all. I run the skype using that method on ipaq514. But awfull quality in connection. I have ipaq 514 with rom 2.05 and skype and fring works very bad. I cant say are usefull. All hackers can play and suggest what is nice and heplful, but I think when I paid for ipaq514 it should work. right?

Edge speeds are not the best for Voip calls. Also a 200 Mhz CPU may not be fast enough to deal with compression. Did you try at least a wifi connection?
Posted by Sems on 1/27/2008 3:00:00 AM
Same horrible quality on my ipaq 514... I tried both skype and fring.. The whole reason why I went for this device was skype (voice over ip as mentioned by hp ...) Now I'm beginning to be afraid that voice over ip would only be working well in corporate environments where the company has set up a voip network without encryption...
Posted by Domani on 1/30/2008 3:00:00 AM
The issue is probably not related to encryption. Did you try it with Edge connection or Wifi?
Posted by Sems on 1/31/2008 3:00:00 AM
I used a wifi connection at home. The same connection I always use when skyping over the pc and then the quality is excellent...

I guess it is the CPU speed, low speed CPUs are known to have issues with Skype (in the past they even had two versions, one for low speed, one for high)

Hi I done all procedures on my HP 514 Smartphone but when I run Skype I have still screen with Licence Agreement and I can't close it and run skype property.
What can I do with this?
Posted by Adam on 5/21/2008 3:00:00 AM
First, install Skype 2.2 for Windows Smartphone from
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/windowsmobile/
Then, replace the two files
\Storage Card\Program Files\Skype\Skype.exe
and
\Windows\SkypeLauncher.exe
with the files from Skype 2.1 for Smartphone:
http://www.sems.org/content/download/skype2.1.smartphone.zip
Done.
P.S: On the long license agreement page, to click agree, I had to scroll all the way to the bottom. When the cursor was blinking at the last line, I clicked one more time the down button and hit the center button to click agree and continue. There is one more warning page, where you'll need to use the center button to continue. Then the rest is straightforward.

On WM6.1, this method works?
Maybe now have easier way to work program for Smartphone Motorola MPX200?

I haven't tried it on 6.1, but it should work. Also, this article is old, there is a 2.5 version, which supports WM Standard, so you can try that first.
