Howto: Application Unlock Motorola Q for Telus

Digg This
Del.icio.us

Well, I did it. (It was damn about time ;))

Special thanks goes to
spddemn at qusers.com.

Here is the easy steps:

1. Download and install Device Security Manager Powertoy for Windows Mobile 5.0 from Microsoft. This is a nifty utility to show what security policy is in effect. If you connect your Q to your PC, you'll see two tier security policy is in effect.

2. Download and copy secpolicies.cab to your Q (using ActiveSync, Total Commander, or just browse this site via Pocket Internet Explorer). I got this from Telus support, after following a post on qusers.com.

3. Run and install it. This allows you to install third party SSL Root Certs.

4. If you run Device Security Manager Powertoy for Windows Mobile 5.0 now (it is listed in Start - Programs as "Security Configuration Manager", you'll see now you are using One Tier Prompt. Select Security Off and click Provision. It will install tool.cab to your device and then provision the settings.

If you want to do it the hard way, you can also change registry keys:

[hkey_local_machine\security\policies\policies'>
"0000101b"=dword:00000001
"00001017"=dword:00000090
"00001007"=dword:00000040
"00001005"=dword:00000028
"00001001"=dword:00000001

to the same effect. Interestingly, on many forums, value for 1017 is set as 090 (hex, originally 080), where as the above tool sets it to 10. Also 1005 is set to DE, where many articles I read sets it to 28. The rest is the same. But right after step 3, I was able to manually edit these keys via Resco Regedit or PHM Regedit (HTC Signed copy)

Yippie, no more restrictions...

This worked on my Verizon Motorola Q. Thx

You rule. This has redeemed the Telus Q for me!

Posted by Kash on 7/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

Also confirmed that above works with Verizon Motorola Q.

Posted by jaybo (email) on 7/14/2006 3:00:00 AM

I'm a bit tech illiterate. Once unlocked with the above codes/programs, I will be able to use my Q on the cingular network?

Posted by Marty (email) on 8/14/2006 3:00:00 AM

Awesome, thanks. This solved a problem on my Verizon Q as well...

Posted by J on 8/15/2006 3:00:00 AM

Marty,

You cannot use a CDMA Device, like Q on a GSM network, the above procedure allows you to install some third party and modify your device to your liking.

Posted by Sems on 8/18/2006 3:00:00 AM

You'll need Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework installed on your computer to get the app from step #1 to install. Just fyi.

Posted by John (email) on 8/18/2006 3:00:00 AM

and afther this procedure i will able to used in the sprint network?

Posted by spica on 8/18/2006 3:00:00 AM

Yes, can we use the Q on any other CDMA network once it is unlocked? If so, can you please reply / email me directly? I know the carrier would have to be willing, I just want to know before I buy a Q from ebay or something. Thanks!

Chris

Posted by Chris (email) on 8/22/2006 3:00:00 AM

I looked on the Motorola website and in fine print it says that the moto q is a GSM phone? Am I right? Then doesn't that mean that once it's unlocked, you should be able to use it on the Cingular wireless network?

Posted by angela (email) on 8/24/2006 3:00:00 AM

Spica and Chris,

The above procedure is for application unlocking, allowing you to tweak and install unsigned applications.

Technically it is possible to obtain the unlock code from the provider and program device settings to use a different network. I have mine, got it from Telus support during activation.

Angela, while a gsm version of Q is in the works, current one is a CDMA device. so you cannot use it on Cingular.

Hi,
Thanks for passing your knowledge to us it was very useful i was able to change all the necessary settings,
But landed into a big problem when restarted it shows sim failure unkown sim status (error 0) please advice.
Thanks in advance.

Posted by Shanker (email) on 9/20/2006 3:00:00 AM

Shanker,

Are you sure you are using Motorola Q? There is no SIM card on most CDMA devices, including Q.

Posted by Sems on 9/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

I have .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 installed on my device and PC but cant get Device Security Manager to install ... any suggestions?

Mike

Posted by Mike (email) on 9/24/2006 3:00:00 AM

Ever since I downloaded your registry edit on to my Motorola Q, I can no longer press and buttons while on a call. Thus ... I can't pick up my voicemail as I need to hit # and enter my password!!!

Please please help ASAP!

Posted by Anna (email) on 9/24/2006 3:00:00 AM

Mike,

What's the error message you are getting? If you want you can grab a registry editor, like Resco Explorer and manually alter the keys to application unlock the phone.

Anna,

Could it be related to something else? I have tried and I was able to press keys during the call. Can anyone else confirm?

euh ... i just want to know if it possible to unlock the motorola Q for MIKE (ptt cell montreal) ??

Posted by Roots (email) on 9/29/2006 3:00:00 AM

Roots, I never heard a Motorola Q for MIKE, but you can give the procedure a shot.

Posted by Sems on 9/29/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hello there.
Who knows where can I find GSM Motorola q?
Or is it possible to make Motorola Q for Verizon work with SIM-card inserted?

Posted by Serge (email) on 10/3/2006 3:00:00 AM

What I want to do is unlock the Q for use with another CDMA network. It was not able to be flashed over, but would this same procedure work to allow it's use on another CDMA network?

Posted by Gabe (email) on 10/3/2006 3:00:00 AM

Serge,

There is currently no GSM Q, there is one coming out in 2007. There is no SIM slot or GSM radio in the Verizon Q, so you cannot use it.

Gabe,

The above procedure is to application unlock the unit, the default unit restricts what applications can be installed, as well as SSL certificates. To unlock the device to use with a different carrier, you'll need the unlock code of the unit. I was there when the store agent was programming the unit and I got it out of him, stating I might need it. Good luck :)

I am looking to buy a smartphone and I really like the Q can you tell me when in 2007 the gsm version of the Q is supposed to come out?

Posted by shakeera (email) on 10/8/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi Shakeera,

It is supposed be coming out Q1 2007, unless there is last minute changes.

Posted by Sems on 10/9/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi:

I followed the directions to the letter, but after installing secpolicies.cab (it was succesful), the Two Tier prompt has not changed to One Tier. I checked everything a few times, but no luck and I can't provision the phone to security off.

I am desperate to install two apps and need help.

PLEASE, someone assist. Thanks.

Posted by Jeff on 11/8/2006 3:00:00 AM

What's the error message you are seeing in the Security Manager Powertoy? Did you try to set the registry entries manually?

Posted by Sems on 11/8/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thanks for the help Sems. No error message in Sec Power Toy in PC. It just won't allow the change of Security to off.

Am I missing something? Any help would be much appreciated. I do not have a reg edit tool and I know there are plenty out there, I am just new to MS as I am a long time Palm OS user and prefer an app like Smartphone Tweaks that handles tha hacks for me.

Posted by Jeff on 11/13/2006 3:00:00 AM

Any help here??? Can someone suggest a solution to this as I still can't unlock the phone using the above steps.

Really in need of some assistance.

Thanks,
Jeff

Posted by Jeff on 11/15/2006 3:00:00 AM

I don't know why Power Toys cannot set the security to off. You have installed the secpolicies.cab right? Your best bet is to download the Resco Registry Editor (www.resco-net.com) and try to set the reg keys. I know it can look hard, but that's the only other option I can think of.

There are many apps you can find Derek, on sites like pocketpcfreewares.com, pocketgear.com, handango.com

There are games, gps/map applications, utilities to tweak the device (Tweaks2K2 is great), Internet tools (like RSS readers, other web browsers, email clients), music and image tools (to view/play music, pictures, videos, etc).

verizon motorola Q there is no way to make it work with cingular doesn't have a sim card

Posted by Mike (email) on 12/13/2006 3:00:00 AM

Is there a way to alter my Verizon Q so that Activesynce will accept an invalid security certificate? My employer performed "system maintenance" to its mail server, and now when I try to sync my phone OTA, I get a message that the security certificate is expired. (On a desktop, I can just click 'Ignore', but there's no such option on the Q. My company won't help because they didn't give me the phone. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Posted by sTiNkY! (email) on 12/20/2006 3:00:00 AM

There is a registry key, that will disable that warning for expired or unknown SSL certs. I can't remember it of the top of my head, but Google is your friend :), if i can dig it up, I'll post it here.

Posted by Sems on 12/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thanks in advance for any help you can lend.

Posted by sTiNkY! on 12/22/2006 3:00:00 AM

Try this, disabling SSL cert check should also prevent errors related to expired certs, if I remember correctly.

Hi,
walked thru the steps and was able to get to Single-level prompt successfully (cool). however, my goal was to install a Equifax Certificate and I was hoping these steps would allow me to install, but I still get a "Security Permission was insufficient to update your device." Any thoughts?

steve

Posted by Steve (email) on 1/17/2007 3:00:00 AM

After getting to Single level prompt, did you set up "security off" and apply it?

Posted by Sems on 1/19/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hello everyone. I am interested in buying the Q but the price is pretty steep for the Sprint version. If I buy a Verizon Q can I get it unlocked and then activate it with Sprint?

Posted by gloria (email) on 1/19/2007 3:00:00 AM

First, let me clarify one more time. The above method is to unlock applications, not unlock the phone to be used on another carrier.

With that said, technically you can get an unlock code from the carrier, but whether they will be willing to provide it or not is a different question.

Posted by Sems on 1/19/2007 3:00:00 AM

Has anyone successfully done this on their Sprint Q? Is it even required on the Sprint Q?

Posted by o'donny on 1/21/2007 3:00:00 AM

Just wanted to say thank you for this. You saved my butt. I tried multiple different methods to get the certificate to install. Downloaded a couple different "certificate installers" that didn't work. Finally came across your site and got the darn thing to sync with the exchange server. I cannot thank you enough. :)

Posted by Payne on 1/21/2007 3:00:00 AM

You are most welcome Payne :)

O'donny, you can try to customize the Q, like change its GlyphCache settings and see if you can or cannot.

With a registry editor:

1)Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE
2. Change the "limit" value :

4096 : this will slow down the display, but use less memory
8192 : this is the default value on Pocket PC, average memory/performances
16384 : this will speed up the display, but use more memory, twice the default Pocket PC value
32768 : Or even more

3)Reboot

If you get an error, this means your Q needs the above procedure.

Hello, I wanted to install Device Security Manager Powertoy for Windows Mobile 5.0 but It asks me to have .net framework 2.0...I do not find it, alone updates.

Is another problem that I do not have the CD of welcome of cellular, where it can lower the program to connect it to my PC?

There is another way of doing it without these programs?

I do not understand this:
If you want to do it the hard way, you can also change registry keys:

[hkey_local_machine\security\policies\policies'>
"0000101b"=dword:00000001
"00001017"=dword:00000090
"00001007"=dword:00000040
"00001005"=dword:00000028

Posted by LAURA (email) on 1/22/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi Laura,

You can grab a copy of .net framework from Microsoft's site - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

You should not need original CD for Q.

For the second part, go to resco-net.com, download Resco Explorer 2005 - http://www.resco.net/smartphone/explorer/downloads.asp

Then install it on your Q. Then run the Registry Editor, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand it, find security, expand it, find policies, expand it, find policies, expand it, then change the values of the keys to the values I wrote. Restart the Q and you are done.

im a little slow at all of this! long story short i bought a verizon Q off of craigslist. they seller said it would work on telus cdma network. i called telus with my new esn number and they dont have it in their database. can i unlock my verizon q using this proceedure and have it work on telus network? i kinda understand the process but i dont quite get how it get a new esn number out of all of this...

any info would help
thanks guys + gals.

Posted by Brent (email) on 2/5/2007 3:00:00 AM

Brent, please read the comments. First, the above method is to unlock applications, not unlock the phone to be used on another carrier. You'll need your unlock code for your Q from Verizon, then you can program it to use under Telus (it will probably need a new PRL from Telus).

Posted by Sems on 2/5/2007 3:00:00 AM

If I have the Master Service Lock code can I take a MOTO Q and allow it to work or any CDMA network or is their another code I would need.

Posted by Jay on 2/28/2007 3:00:00 AM

Jay, I believe that should be all you need.

Posted by Sems on 3/1/2007 3:00:00 AM

I followed the directions above, and everything seemed to work great, so thank you. I then downloaded google maps on to my Q, and tried to Track Location (GPS), but I get a msg saying,
Cannot connet to GPS Hardware
Your GPS receiver does not appear to be responding.

So does the Q have GPS? How do I activate it?

Thanks, and sorry for the stupid questions.

B

Posted by Brennan (email) on 3/2/2007 3:00:00 AM

While Q has a built in assisted GPS, it is not accessible by map applications, thus you'll need a Bluetooth GPS Receiver (www.buygpsnow.com is a good place to look).

Posted by Sems on 3/3/2007 3:00:00 AM

Tried the above on my Sprint Q phone. The secpolicies.cab runs without errors and seems to work. Likewise the Device Security Manager Powertoy for Windows Mobile 5.0 appears to work and appears to set the security to "Security Off." I haven't tried to load an unsigned application yet.

Will this application unlock proceedure also allow a user to remove factory-installed applications? Specifically, I want to get rid of the Goodlink, Sprint Software Store, and Pocket MSN EXEx, CABs, and DLLs.

Running the above app unlock procedure DID NOT affect the permission on these files; I still can't change their permission and then remove them.

Does anyone know a way to remove these locked files?

Thanks

Posted by Joe Q User on 3/13/2007 3:00:00 AM

Joe,

Most likely these files you are referring are in ROM and thus cannot be removed. But they don't consume your usable space either, so you can simply remove their links from your Start Menu, they'll be out of your way.

Posted by Sems on 3/14/2007 3:00:00 AM

So after all of this is said and done what are the possibilities with the motoQ? I do have the master pin number if thats what you call it. Its a six digit number right? anyways I have it and want to do cool this with it. Can anyone email me options. hiratamuse@gmail.com. Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate the help.

Posted by Jason (email) on 3/24/2007 3:00:00 AM

There is not much of a "cool" thing to do with the six digit master pin, other than programming your phone to use a different network (like switch from Telus to Bell), provided that the other network operator is willing to activate your device on their network.

Posted by Sems on 3/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

Is there any particular site where I can find information on doing things with the motoq? Going on another network doesn't interest me too much but finding out what I can do does.

Posted by Jason (email) on 3/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

Take a look at http://www.qusers.com/

Posted by Sems on 3/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

I use a Moto Q here in Brazil (CDMA) I saw that I have option to insert a image to a SMS, but when I follow the menu, this key can not be used. If I unlock like you tell here, this function will be used? Thanks. Reinaldo

Posted by Reinaldo (email) on 3/29/2007 3:00:00 AM

Unlocking mentioned here will not change how your applications work, it will allow you to make changes to the locked portions of registry and also allow you to install self signed certificates and unsigned applications.

With that said, there might be a registry hack to enable the missing functionality. I suggest checking with your provider to see if there is a way to enable it.

Posted by Sems on 3/29/2007 3:00:00 AM

The .cab file is actually a .xml file.
how do you make it work?

Posted by harley (email) on 4/1/2007 3:00:00 AM

The xml file in the cab is a Microsoft Provisioning xml file, simply copy the cab file to the device and run it, don't extract it.

Hi, I'm also from Brazil...
Do anyone there know how to unlock bluetooth capability on a Moto-Q (CDMA).

My funny phone company said it IS UNLOCKED but I can't transfer files through bluetooth connection, even if it is within the options on the menu.

It always stalls before completion, even when it is authorized and paired. (Though it can receive.)

Needless to say I can't Sync by BT, nor set-up a wireless network (PAN) with my desktop to share internet connection...

Thanks
Krassyus Monteiro

Posted by Krassyus (email) on 5/4/2007 3:00:00 AM

If the file transfer starts and works for a while, it is unlikely a restricted bluetooth stack, rather an issue with your desktop Bluetooth device.

1. Did you check for latest Q updates, using Motorola Software Update (available at www.hellomoto.com)?

2. Are you able to transfer files to your PC with another device?

Simply add the value. On some providers, it doesn't exist on default.

Hello there. I'm a little behind on technology so I'll attempt to ask my question hoping you can understand what I need. I have a Motorola Q from Verizon that I got flashed over to Cricket network here in Houston. Everything works ok, except that I cannot receive/send emails, access the internet, nor send/receive pic messages. I have the service for internet and email receipt w/ my current provider, Cricket, but the features do not work on the Q. Will the steps you've posted allow internet/email/pic messaging to work? Thank you!

does anybody want to make some money unlocking
my sprint phone for use with another carrier?

Posted by scott sprague (email) on 6/18/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi Rena,

What I listed allows you to install third party applications. It has nothing to do with your Internet connection. A common issue is that when programming the phone, some dealers do not properly setup MID. You can call Cricket and have them walk you through the programming.

Scott,

Did you try to contact Sprint to get your unlock code? You can tell them your connection is not working or similar, ask them your unlock code. That's how I got mine for Telus, as my Internet connection was failing (similar to Rena).

Posted by Sems on 6/19/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi,

Earlier this month I succeeded in enabling mobile web and picture messaging (mms) on my Motorola Q, with Cricket as my service provider.

I have posted images, and an initial writeup of the procedure over at howardforums, containing all the necessary info to duplicate my results.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1177038&page=1

Here in Denver, I run a side-business of reprogramming pda phones for cricket, and specialize in enabling web/mms. (http://www.geocities.com/beezlewaxin/denver-craigslist-org-ele-354254737.htm)

I started offering this service to Q owners in the Denver area via our local craigslist site, and there is now a good handful of Qs here running around on cricket's network with full mobile web and mms functionality.

This is all punctuated by Cricket's very recent (June 13, 2007) move to open-up their mobile web, and allow unrestricted access to the entire Internet. EVDO is the next big thing we're all waiting on.

I was scammed on ebay, purchased a Q that is with Alltel, but I have Verizon, even though the phone was listed as Verizon. Can anyone tell me if I will be able to have the phone switched to Verizon? If so what do I need to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated so I am not out the money. Thanks! Sandy

Posted by Sandy (email) on 7/5/2007 3:00:00 AM

As you can see from the article and comments above, the procedure is not unlocking your phone to use another provider, rather allowing your phone to install any software.

With that said, you'll need to get a hold of unlock code for your device from Alltel. Then you can reprogram your Q and use it with Verizon.

Posted by Sandy (email) on 7/5/2007 3:00:00 AM

Technically, it is something available to you. However, phone companies are known to make you jump through hoops. When I got my unlock code for my Telus Q, I was lucky. They didn't properly program the phone, so I had to call in, they walked me through steps to program it and to program it, you need your code.

You'll have to call Alltel support, explaining your situation and hopefully they'll agree to release it to you.

Posted by Sems on 7/6/2007 3:00:00 AM

Will this work from BELL to TELUS for Moto Q?

Posted by Tiffany (email) on 7/23/2007 3:00:00 AM

If you have an unlock code for your Bell, it should. However, it is up to Telus whether or not allow you use a device from another carrier.

Posted by Sems on 7/23/2007 3:00:00 AM

I completed the above steps and still have issues with syncing my Groupwise 7 calendar. Any thoughts?

I getting the follwoing error message..."unable to connect to device. Verify that AtiveSync is running." Active Sync is running -- where from here.

Posted by Pam (email) on 8/10/2007 3:00:00 AM

Sorry Pam, I have no experience with Groupwise. The application unlock for Q allows you to install unsigned applications, or applications signed by untrusted certificates. It will not fix any sync issues you are having.

With that said, have you checked with your Groupwise admin? Is it only Calendar failing (I don't know what else you can sync with a Windows Mobile device and Groupwise), or the others, such as Contacts, etc failing too.

Does anyone know how I can unlock a Motorola V557. I purchased from Cingular and the applications are locked and i cannot get to the settings to change the password. I called Cingular and they said if the applications are locked I would have to send it back to Motorola. Does anyone know how I can unlock the applications to get to the settings. It is my phone and I let my daughter use it and some how she locked the applications and now does not know how or what she did to lock them. I think she was trying to change her password and somehow entered it in the wrong spot and it thought she wanted applications locked. This phone is not any good if we cannot get the applications unlocked. Do I have to send it to Motorola or is there a more simple way! Please help. Thanks in advance.

Posted by CS (email) on 8/10/2007 3:00:00 AM

CS if your daughter set a lock on the applications from the device you would need the code that she set to to unlock the applications. to put the password in you would need to be in the settings of the device.

Hey so i got this motorola Q from a friend who forgot his pswd but with Bell.. whom i'm with.. and i was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to unlock the device password when you first turn on the phone>??

See http://www.hellomotoq.com/forums/free-all-off-topic/75-hello-everyone.html

on how to hard reset a Motorola Q. That will do the trick, wiping the device to factory defaults, getting rid of the device password.

I was having alittle trouble with my blackjack. I have Vista so in order to sync stuff with my phone i have to use Windows Mobile Device Center. And I'm having trouble figuring out how to sync the Setup XML using Window Mobile Device Center. I've tried clicking and dragging the setup file to My Documents on my phone but when I open up my Security Manager it still says I have a Two Tier Setup. So I'm kinda stuck any help would be greatly apperciated, Thanks

Posted by Bio9456 on 9/16/2007 3:00:00 AM

Well I actually got it figured out I was extracting the file instead of just putting on my phone and running it that way (stupid). But I was wondering if it was possible to change the font style on my phone? Since I have unlocked it now.

Posted by Bio9456 on 9/16/2007 3:00:00 AM

Technically, yes. You can install fonts to your device, then change the system font to your hearts desire. I don't recall the necessary registry keys for it, but little bit of Google can do wonders :)

Posted by Sems on 9/16/2007 3:00:00 AM

hey guys,
I just tried this right now on my Samsung Blackjack;
I installed the SCM onto my computer, placed the .cab file in my documents, and then ran the SCM program. I then changed the configuration of it to "Security Off" and then it installed the file onto my blackjack. However, when I try to edit some of the files like banner.gif it still does not allow me to do that, nor does it let me touch a lot of the things in the Windows directory. Is this supposed to allow me that access? if not does anybody know how to change the annoying start.wav and stop.wav files in the blackjack?

Thanks,
Jo

Posted by jo (email) on 10/12/2007 3:00:00 AM

Jo,

The application unlock allows you to access certain registry keys and also install unsigned applications. Many of the files in /windows are in the ROM, thus you cannot edit those. If the file is not in the ROM, try using a third party utility, like Total Commander and see if it can overwrite them. The file attributes might be the cause of the problem.

what exactly can i do once i unlock my verizon Motorola q?

Posted by jake on 10/16/2007 3:00:00 AM

See my comment above yours Jake. Application unlocking allows you to access registry keys that you could not change before, many of which allows you to tweak your unit, such as speeding up display. It also allows you to install unsigned applications, many small developers cannot afford expensive signing certifcates (similar to SSL). If you don't application unlock, you won't be able to install any such apps (there are many great ones).

I have a Moto Q from Ampd Mobile who have just filed bankruptcy, just want to know if I would be able to use it with verizon, or will they allow me to use it on verizon?

Posted by Arielle on 10/17/2007 3:00:00 AM

and would my phone need to be unlocked?

Posted by arielle on 10/17/2007 3:00:00 AM

The above procedure is not for your needs Arielle. AMPd was using Verizon Network and I can imagine those customers will be transferred to Verizon. You'll need to get your unlock code from Ampd directly, which will enable you to use your phone with Verizon.

hello, i was curious, if i unlock my sprint version of the motorola Q will i be able to use it on the verizon network since they are both cdma, right?

Posted by aobrock (email) on 10/23/2007 3:00:00 AM

Aobrock, as I repeated in many comments above, the method discussed here is not for using your device on another network, it is simply to allow you to modify registry, along with installing unsigned apps.

Posted by Sems on 10/23/2007 3:00:00 AM

Thank you for your above advice on unlocking the moto q. I was wondering if it's possible to acess wireless internet (without having to go through your wireless carrier) for the q?

Posted by aly (email) on 10/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

You can get a wifi card and use a wifi access point to access internet.

So I have the sprint q unlocked , and I'm now trying to change the Hex, Dec, ESN / information to have it work on the Metro PCS network.

How do I edit the information on my Q to use the Metro PCS network?

I have a metro pcs phone its the Kyocera Strobe, what information do I need to copy over?

Every provider has their own special codes to program phones. Telus uses ##telus to go into programming mode. Then you'll need:

Mobile# = 10 digit
Mid = 10 digit
Sid = 5 digit
Net id= 5 digit

That's all

Posted by Sems on 11/4/2007 2:00:00 AM

Alright, so I downloaded everything, installed the .cab file on my phone manually through the phone. Then I went into Security Configuration Manager then put the configuration type to security off. But when I try to send a picture of recieve one I still get the random phone number with no attachment. I'm with telus. Any help would be great.

Posted by Danny on 11/5/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi Danny,

Care to elaborate? How are you trying to send the picture? As MMS? Email? How is this tied into Application unlocking Q?

Posted by Sems on 11/5/2007 3:00:00 AM

I am trying to send a picture VIA MMS. Also I tried sending a picture through MMS from another phone and I still cant get it from them. I've made sure all my configurations are correct. I dont know if there is something else I have to do with the phone to enable MMS?

Posted by Danny on 11/6/2007 3:00:00 AM

I haven't used MMS on Telus, but it should be enabled by default. Your best bet is to call their data support.

Posted by Sems on 11/6/2007 3:00:00 AM

Quick question. I am registered through bell, but I have this telus phone I need to unlock. Do these instructions work on any phone? I have the LG Chocolate/telus. And once the phone is unlocked I can just take it in to my carrier and get the # transferred?

Thanks

Posted by Jackie (email) on 11/24/2007 3:00:00 AM

The above procedure is to application unlock this specific model, the default unit restricts what applications can be installed, as well as SSL certificates. To unlock the device to use with a different carrier, you'll need the unlock code of the unit. You will need to contact Telus or person you bought it from, as they can provide you the code.

I am trying to follow the directions as posted at the very start of this forum. I am stuck on the whole copy the cab file thing. I clicked on the secpolicies.cab link and have tried various things to get it to load into my Motorola Q. No luck. Would someone please provide me with excrutiatingly detailed instructions on how to do it? Assume I am an absolute idiot and know nothing.

Thanks!

Read the user guide of the Q. It should be there. Also you can take a look at:

If you are running on Vista or a Mac, let me know.

This doesnt work for the Q9h. I tried changing the regsitry keys but it did not work.

Has anyone successfully unlocked a Q9h running WM 6.0 ?

Posted by RPM on 12/20/2007 3:00:00 AM

RPM, you are aware this only "application unlocks" the unit, right? It is not a "SIM unlock"? I never needed to do a application unlock on my Q9h, as it was already there (Mine was from Motorola directly). Where did you get yours from? Rogers? AT&T?

What is the error? What are you trying to do exactly?

Posted by Sems on 12/21/2007 3:00:00 AM

Great site... I have a old Verizon Q and would like to unlock it and use it on METROPCS which is not gsm network however i think i would have to change the imei number of the q to match my metro is this true & or Possible

Thanks

Posted by Brandon (email) on 1/3/2008 3:00:00 AM

Hi Brandon,

First, IMEI number is a unique identifier of a GSM phone. On a CDMA phone, like Motorola Q, you have a similar number called ESN and you cannot change it.

The above procedure is to application unlock the device, allowing you to install third party applications that are not signed with a certificate or make changes to registry.

To move a CDMA phone from a provider to another, you'll need to get the unlock code, in your case you need to talk to Verizon. With the code, you can reprogram the unit to work on MetroPCS.

Posted by Sems on 1/4/2008 3:00:00 AM

I lost my phone # from the my Q, please can some tell how can i go into programming mode from my unit. I'm with telus and i tried to ##telus but no luck. Thanks.

Thanks!! :-)

Posted by Sadie (email) on 1/15/2008 3:00:00 AM

Unless you are travelling to US, Korea, Brazil or Russia, it won't work. Only a few countries support CDMA.

Just grab a cheap GSM phone (unlocked) and then buy prepaid GSM from the country you are going to.

Posted by Angie on 1/24/2008 3:00:00 AM

Any CDMA phone can be unlocked with a code provided by the carrier. But most carriers require the customer to be using their service at least several months before giving that kind of info. There are companies who would unlock phones, but most of these services are for GSM phones, not CDMA.

I have a Motorola Q that has been flashed to Cricket from Verizon. The user that owned the phone prior to me was able to use the web and the picture messaging, but they are not working for me... only calls and text msg. Does anyone know what I need to do, or the setting configurations for that? I have used (my 10 dig. number) xxxxxxxxxx@my cricket.com and cricket as the password under the settings, but am not sure about the proxy settings, etc. or if there is a fix. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help...

Posted by Kim on 2/2/2008 3:00:00 AM

Kim, did you try to call Cricket support? I don't know Internet settings for them, once they are programmed into phone, you'll be able to use web and picture messaging (as both need an internet connection).

Posted by Sems on 2/2/2008 3:00:00 AM

I didn't call customer support, but I went by a Cricket store and they wouldn't give me any information since it was a "flashed phone"... basically I got the run around it seemed. I will try calling customer support and see if I can find a kinder soul there. I appreciate your response, Kim

Posted by Kim on 2/3/2008 3:00:00 AM

Many of the store sales people are not only very technical, but also can be rude. Most of the cellphone carriers have a data support lines, if Cricket has one, try calling there.

I unlocked my Motorola Q (CDMA) Telus phone. Yeah. :) Paid Bell Mobility $15.00 dollars to transfer my telephone number. Everything is going well, or should I say too well. My problem is when I receive a text it tells me the persons info (Name, Time, Date, Number, ect.) great, but I am only able to read the 1st letter of the text. I can send text without any problems. Anyone have any suggestions? HELP... :(

Thanks

Posted by Monique on 5/4/2008 3:00:00 AM

Does this happen text messages coming from other Bell Mobility users or any other carriers as well. Did you try to send a text message via email (send an email to phonenumber@txt.bellmobility.ca)? Have you tried to call Bell support? Also is there any third party software loaded on the device that may interfere? If so, did you try to hard reset the unit and try?

Posted by Sems on 5/5/2008 3:00:00 AM

Hi, I can receive text messages coming from other Bell Mobility users but I do not receive text messages from any other carriers. I have called bell support and they tell me everything should be working. Third party software? What is that? Could I have downloaded something by mistake? I have only used your aplication for unlocking the cell. If I hard reset will I lose my calendar and phone book? I had to input these by hand, my hp would not let me sync.

Posted by Monique on 5/14/2008 3:00:00 AM

Third party software is any additional software that you had installed to your device. If you hard reset the unit, all yoour calendar and phone book data will be erased. You can install a copy of Outlook on your desktop, along with Active Sync and synchronize/backup your calendar/contacts before hard resetting.

I suggest reading articles at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/smartphone/default.mspx

They are good reads for beginners.

I mean the whole start to finish. I am changing to altell to avoid being ripped off anymore money from verizon. Please help. Normally go to one stop wireless in GA but not near there anymore, have spent $1900.00 in the 6mos been with that place and can't handle the crap anymore but love my new phone so want to use it. You can contact Verizon, and ask them your reprogramming code. With that code, Alltel can reprogram the phone to be used on their network.

What can I add to it that I couldn't before? I added a song to it and played it with windows media player.....it plays it fine.......just no sound. I have moved the vol. up and donw, no effect. pressed speaker phone button, no effect. Do you know what's wrong or something I can try? Thx a bunch....

can i still transfer it to cricket?

Posted by Chrisy (email) on 7/18/2008 3:00:00 AM

There are many third party applications (free or paid) that will not normally install due to security restrictions. Application unlock allows you to install them.

I don't recall using the Q to listen music from its speakers. Have you tried to use it with a headset?

Chrisy, it is technically doable, but you'll need to get the unlock code from Telus. I don't know if they'll be willing to do so.

Posted by Sems on 7/18/2008 3:00:00 AM

Christy......I got my Q off ebay and it was from Alltel. I took it to a guy that ownes a local cell store and he unlocked and "flashed" my phone to use on cricket. all works good except for internet and sending pics I think. He charged me $80, and I thought that was a lil high, but I didn't want to send my phone off for a week or 2 to another state to have the same thing done. I need to find out how to make the internet work on this phone for Cricket.....does anybody know how? as far as the headset, I thought about trying that but if it only works that way then it's a waste of my time.....I have a zune for that. Can I set it up to where it plays a song when someone calls? That's really what I was trying to do.

You might be needing a newer version of Motorola Phone Tools.

Rhbandit,

Internet problems usually occur if the MID setting is not properly.. Have the store check if the mobile # and MID are both set to your 10 digit phone number. Also make sure you have Internet service enabled at Cricket.

Joe, on a Telus Q, you type in ##telus to program the phone. Bell probably has something similar to program the unit.

Kayla, afaik, you'll need to get the unlock code from Alltel first, to be able to reprogram it.

It runs WM6, but I've heard 6.1 is better. Is there a way to upgrade to the latest version of the OS, and is it worth it?
Likewise, does anyone know if there will be an updated Q launched for CDMA hostages like me?

Posted by David (email) on 11/2/2008 2:00:00 AM

John, original Motorola Q cannot be upgraded to WM 6.1. As far as I know, only Motorola Q9 models are upgradable to 6.1

David,

While Verizon released 6.1 for Q9C, I believe Telus is yet to release it. There is tons of updates from 6.0 to 6.1, I highly recommendend it. Right now Motorola is focusing on their Android product, so I am doubtful they will release a new Q model.

The methods explained here are to allow you customize your phone and install applications that you cannot normally install. It will not unlock Internet browsing or MMS.

With that said, afaik, if you have an unlocked unit, it can be programmed to work fully on Metro, including Internet connection.

If the phone is blacklisted, I don't think you can use it with any other carrier. But I never heard a carrier blacklisting a phone, unless it was stolen/lost.

Tempe, if I recall correctly, you can do this without activating the phone. Keep in mind, the article is about application unlocking, not using your phone with a different carrier.

Does any of this work for the new TMobile Dash? I'm trying to get the Vista Emulator display to work and it has issues with detecting signal strength and says the phone needs to be unlocked.

Yes, it should.

I have a BJ I, with cingular & can't get it to appunlock
1) I downloaded & installed the Security Conf Manager
2) Got the secpolicies.cab. By the way can someone state exactly WHERE it should be copied on the device? WHICH DIRECTORY? I copied it to the root dir (the one containing "WINDOWS"), I even tried to copy itinside the WINDOWS folder itself, but nothing worked.

In the Security Conf Manager, I get a message reading: “Sign the CPF required for communication” and inside the window the explanation: “Your device configuration is Two-Tier Prompt. This configuration does not allow you to install certificates on the device.
To change the configuration on the device or get a development device contact your mobile operator.”

So… How can a Two-Tier-Prompt be unlocked, has anyone been successful at it?

Thx in advance 4 ur help!

I have had the Q with alltel service for one year, i am finding all sorts of resources for other carriers but i tried the methods provided here with no luck. is this due to differences in the Alltel software that is on my phone?

thanks for any help

Posted by Viss (email) on 2/22/2009 3:00:00 AM

Freakqnc,

Simply copy secpolicies.cab to any folder and run it. (ie. you have to open file explorer, find the folder you copied it to and click to start its install). Once install is done, you should be able to proceed with Security Conf Manager

Pyrate,

Glad to help :)

Viss,

Any error messages? Which point are you stuck at?

I have a verizon Q I did all the steps. How do I know it is unlocked. I want to use it with virgin mobile

Thanks

Posted by ed (email) on 4/18/2009 3:00:00 AM

The methods explained here are to allow you customize your phone and install applications that you cannot normally install. It will not unlock Internet browsing or MMS.

You can get an unlock code from Verizon to reprogram the device to use on Virgin Mobile

I read parts of the thread above but didn't see exactly what I'm looking for. I would like to make my Telus Motorola Q a GPS device. I saw one post where you suggested picking up a bluetooth GPS receiver. Do I still need to subscribe to a service or can I just get a map pack? I checked out buygpsnow.com site but there doesn't seem to be much help on there. I also don't want to throw money at things that won't work.

Any thoughts?

I'm in Canada using the FIDO network, and I have a BJ2 running WM6.1. I just unlocked it last night and I have spent over a week trying to find a way to app-unlock the phone. So far, all the supposed "fixes" that require me to download a .cab of some kind are ALL DUDS. I keep getting this message when I load the file to my phone

"Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system privileges."

I have a registry editor on trial version as well, and I'm unable to edit a vast majority of my phone registry, so the supposed "registry hacks" are all duds as well.

I'm very, very annoyed and frustrated. Is there ANYONE out there who can offer me a solution that doesn't apply to any American-network phone? (Seriously, I'm so discouraged there isn't more about this outside of the US, you guys surely aren't the only BJ2 users!)

hello, i have a motorola q9m and right now its with verizon wireless. i move to canada and im trying to activate it with solo.... will this work for me too ???

thank you

Posted by jc (email) on 7/11/2009 3:00:00 AM

hi, i got my q9h from my boyfriend and he purchased it at United Arab Emirates,im not sure what provider he used. so where will i call to get my code unlocked?will i find the recent provider in my phone?

Posted by sienna on 7/15/2009 3:00:00 AM

There might be operator logo showing up during boot or there might be branding on the device. Also, since yours is a GSM model, it may be already unlocked. There are also third party companies over internet that will provide unlock codes for a fee.

Try http://www.horizonwirelessonline.com, my friend Steve over there will take good care of you, he is a great guy.

Posted by Sems on 7/16/2009 3:00:00 AM

Martin, you can buy a BT GPS device, then you'll need to get a map software. There are free and paid ones, depending on your needs, whether you are geocaching or need turn by turn directions.

Jali, it all depends how much Fido has tightened the security. When you try to connect with Device Security Manager Powertoy for Windows Mobile 5.0, what's the error message?

jc, I wrote it so many times. The methods explained here are to allow you customize your phone and install applications that you cannot normally install.

You can get an unlock code from Verizon to reprogram the device to use on Bell Solo.

i already called my gsm carrier and when they try to send the gprs/mms settings on my phone i got this error message saying " system notification: device settings cant be changed" so im still thinking it is still locked. i also found out that the manufacturer of this phone is from europe since i saw that the default settings on the band width is euoropean. the site you gave me is a paid support. can u help me getting a software or site without paying.im cant trust any transaction via internet.thanks sem..

Posted by sienna (email) on 7/17/2009 3:00:00 AM

Sienna, to me it sound like the device seems to be application locked, not SIM locked.

Does the device ask for an unlock code when you insert the SIM from your GSM carrier? Can you make calls?

Posted by Sienna on 7/20/2009 3:00:00 AM

yah, it is phone lock. nope, it didnt ask for any code. its the internet and MMS settings that are locked.i tried to search and id confirmed that i need to unlock this. do u know any site that can help me unlock my phone?

I bought a Motorola Q from a guy on craigslist and he bought it from a cricket store pre-flashed. When I got it I was able to use the internet for a brief time before he had it switched, but now that its in my name the internet no longer works and its asking for a username, password and domain. I know the username is "my#@mycricket.com", passowrd "cricket", but the domain is whats getting me. I spoke to a customer service guy at cricket who told me the domain was "cricket" but it still doesn't work and I'm trying to avoid going across town to a store and possibly face a fee of some kind when I'm broke. Someone please help me get my internet and MMS working.
