UT Starcom 6700 from Telus Mobility

Well, we are finally getting some decent Windows Mobile devices from our Canadian cellular companies. Following Bell's EVDO launch, Telus didn't wait for their initial rollout plan in Q1 2006 and released several EVDO devices. Their Sierra Wireless 580 already supported EVDO, so as soon as they flipped the switch, current 580 users started to enjoy the EVDO speeds.

And last week, they have released UTStarcom (aka Audiovox) 6700. It is a device built by the same company - HTC - who has built XDA I-III, Jam, KJam and HP 6515 to name a few. Its code name is HTC Apache and has been released earlier by Verizon and Sprint in US.

The device specifications are:

Dimensions: 4.25" x 2.3" x 1.0"
Weight: 6.07 oz
Processor: 416 MHz Intel® processor
Wireless: WiFi, Bluetooth, EVDO
Expansion Slot: Mini-SD
Battery Type: 1350 mAh Li-Ion Polymer
Audio Out: Speaker, 2.5mm jack
Audio In: Microphone
Resolution: 240 x 320 pixels
Keyboard: QWERTy integrated
Handwriting Recognition: Yes
Digital Camera: 1.3 megapixel integrated camera

In comparison, the recently famous HTC Wizard (aka Imate Kjam, Qtek 9100 and many other brands) has:

Weight: 5.64 oz
Dimensions: 4.25" x 2.28" x 0.93"

So 6700 weighs a bit heavier. But not very noticable. So far it has been around 24 hours since I got the device and haven't messed with it too much yet.

The device runs Windows Mobile 5.0, the latest from Microsoft. The processor speed difference to my Kjam (200 Mhz) is noticable and feels much better. The menus and programs respond faster.

Here is my initial thoughts:

1. There is no /Storage folder availabe to store your data (in Kjam that is around 28Mb storage space). It can be useful at times.

2. Telus has started selling these, before their sales software is updated. The store people not only have a clue about the available data plans, but also they cannot see all the available plans on their computer. For example you can actually get a plan called Email & Web 100 (http://www.telusmobility.com/on/business_solutions/email_web_100.shtml), but if you go to the store now, highest plan they can activate is 60. Interestingly both plans have "unlimited" data, but 60 is capped at 50Mb and 100 is capped at 100 Mb. The fine print says "TELUS Mobility considers usage in excess of 50 MB of data per month on this plan to be abusive, and reserves the right to charge $10/MB for any such excess usage." (this was for Email & Web 60, for 100 it says same thing with 100 MB data.). To be able to get the 100 plan, you'll have to initially get the 60 plan, then call Telus to switch to 100 (it is called "Connect MD 100" in their lingo).

3. I hate to see all these cellular companies offering high speeds, then capping you at 50 to 100MB, with EVDO speeds (500-700 Kbit/s), you'll use that up within several days, if you especially start watching streaming movies.

4. Don't even think about going to US and using your EVDO data, roaming charges is $8/MB, ouch.

5. All the usual Windows Mobile 5 (WM5 for short) is there.

6. As usual with WM5 devices, there is still no backup software.

7. Keyboard is beautiful, it is easy to use, keys are big and tactile.

8. Haven't tried much of the camera yet, but I like having a switch to turn on the macro mode to take closeup pictures (it is right around the camera lens).

9. I connected Jabra BT250v easily, but haven't messed with it yet.

10. The KJam had a feature allowing to fully turn off the device (since WM5 devices finally use persistent storage, this is a good idea, for example to store the device when not in use). So far I haven't figured it out how to do it (it may not be possible) on 6700. Keep pressing the power button only turns off the backlight.

11. The default page for IE redirects you automatically to Telus site, I wonder why they didn't put a local startup page.

12. The speeds are amazing, my initial sync with our Exchange server took less than a minute. At downtown, I saw 700 Kbits/s speed, in Whitby I saw 500 Kbits/s, which are very high compared to EDGE or 1X speeds.

13. I love the 5 way joystick, it is similar to HP 6515. Much more accurate then the rockers these late devices have.

14. I am used to having to buttons on the top, for example I program the top right one for OK/Close function, it helps a lot for a single hand no stylus operation. The 6700 have no buttons on top, but they are right around the joystick.

15. Some of the hardware buttons can be programmed into two actions, one with regular push, one with push and hold. For example one of the side buttons launches IE, if you keep pushing it, it launches Wireless manager.

16. Wifi works like a charm, I need to see if it supports G or not.

17. The price point is exciting, with a 3 yr contract, you can get it for $399, with no contracts it will be $549 (you get $50/yr of contract)

I'll add more thoughts on the device, as I use it more, but I love it so far :)

Here is some more pictures for you to view and compare the device:

Comments

You are right on with your comments, I am an IT person and I find this PDA very refreshing especially due to the fact that I can now terminal into servers to provide technical support.

I am however disappointed that the email client does not have a reply to option and that the battery life is so short.

I hope the reply to option will be added in any upcoming updates and I also hope that there will be a longer life battery available soon.

I find your work to be very accurate,

Keep up the good work.

Tony

Thanks Tony...

What do you mean by email client doesn't have reply to option. I use Messaging client daily and it has Reply, Reply To All and Forward options. I am using Exchange Server, but it should be available for POP3 or Hotmail accounts as well.

I Just Purchased one, i havent got it yet, wondering if you know of any good PDA games, or if online poker is available for it ,?

Check out:

http://www.handango.com
http://www.pocketgear.com

for Pocket PC software and games. I think there is couple of them you can play online with your friends. Also, there are online poker games available for your Pocket PC, where you can play with real money. Just search on Google.

It a great device and I see Telus is now offering a longer life battery.

One BIG complaint I have is the phone functions suck. Very poor audio. Everyone keeps asking me if I am phoning them from the North pole. I have a blue tooth ear piece and that did not help either. It still sounds like I am in a small box 1500 kms away. Next to impossible to use in a noisy resturant. No voice dialing either.

It checks for new e mail every 15 minutes and the screen becomes touch sensitive. If its in your pocket it has a habit of dialing your last call. I took it out yesterday to find I had been connected for two hours.

One cool feature is you can download your own mp3 files and use them as your ring tone.

Has anyone tried to use this divice with GPS system? IF so, what did you experience?

Posted by Glen (email) on 1/27/2006 3:00:00 AM

@David: I never had the problems with sound, it could be a faulty device. Also you can specify what period do you want to use to check emails and set a shorter period to turn off the device.

Finally, voice dialling has never been a part of the OS. You can get Vito Voice Dialler or Microsoft Voice Command, both work great.

@Glen, I used a SirfStar III BT GPS unit, along with Mapopolis, Navigon and Tomtom. All worked great. I'd highly recommend a Bluetooth GPS unit. No more cables ;)

I am thinking about getting a 6700. I am wondering if I can talk on the phone..and surf the web at the same time....with either wifi....or EVDO

Posted by Arif Dewji (email) on 2/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

Also..anyone of you guys install skype, and use it as a wifi phone? Anyone try talking to two people at once....one on skype and one on your cell phone line.

Posted by Arif Dewji (email) on 2/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

Arif, you can talk and surf via Wifi (EVDO will be put into dormant mode, while you are talking, so you cannot surf at the same time).

As for Skype, it works very nicely, though I haven't tried talking to two people at once.

Bought the Starcom for X-mas and so far so good. Only problem or issue I have is that I am unable to sync the unit anywhere. We use it for personal use and have Microsoft Express as email at home which doesn't allow us to sync. Short of upgrading to full on Outlook does anyone know how or what we may use to sync to save all the contacts and calendar we have built up? God forbid the unit ever crashes and I have to re-enter all that info again.

Maybe I'm missing something?? Thakns for any help or info.

Posted by Scott (email) on 3/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

Couple of options to sync Outlook Express with Pocket PC:

1. You can use a third party software like Intellisync:
http://www.intellisync.com/pages/Products/Intellisync-Handheld-Edition/For-Individuals/

or SyncExpress

http://www.syncdata.it/syncexpress.html

2. Get a free Exchange account at live.mail2web.com, copy your contacts to there and you can always have over the air sync of your contacts, calendar and other data.

Hello,

How does the current Starcom 6700 compare to the Blackberry that Telus is marketing? Any reasons to go for one over the other, price aside.

Dennis

Posted by Dennis Maslo (email) on 4/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

Those are completely two different devices, it is like apples and oranges. Both has good PIM functionality.

Blackberry's are mostly email oriented devices, it has some nice applications, but no touch screen, no video or sound capabilities (yeah it can use mp3 ringtones, but that's about it).

On the other hand a Pocket PC Phone Edition device has a larger and touch screen, can recognize text, open and edit office documents, play video and audio files, play games, and so much more.

It will boil down to what exactly are you planning to do with either device.

Posted by Sems on 4/3/2006 3:00:00 AM

just got a 6700 and am wondering how to sync with anything, I mainly want to sync with desktop and enter contact info cant seem to get it to work

Posted by Tom (email) on 4/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

The steps you'd need:

1. Install Outlook 2002 from the CD.
2. Install Active Sync from the CD (or get the latest from www.pocketpc.com)
3. Connect the USB cable to the device and your desktop
4. Sync.

Also you can sync with a Exchange Server, if you have a Exchange email account. You can get a free one from http://live.mail2web.com/

Is there any reason that i cannot access road runner webmail. i tried and it comes up a blank page.

Posted by Harvey (email) on 4/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

trying to choose between the treo 650 & the 6700, main looking for a phone as well as a organizer. Any ideas what would be best price aside.
thanks

Posted by Rod (email) on 4/20/2006 3:00:00 AM

Harvey,

Roadrunner web mail might be checking the browser version, there are registry hacks, to make Pocket Internet Explorer look like IE 6. Also you can try alternatively to use www.mail2web.com/pda to access your Roadrunner emails. It is pda friendly.

Rod,

Treo was a good and solid device, however it is rather old. Palm is starting to use Windows Mobile, instead of Palm OS. If you are with Verizon in US, you can get a Treo 700w, which is Windows Mobile 5. Otherwise, UT Starcom 6700 is a solid device, fast, works nicely and perfect organizer, especially if you have an Exchange Server account. I can keep myself up to date through wireless Active Sync throughout the day.

Posted by Sems on 4/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi,

I am looking between this device, Treo 650, and Blackberry 7250. I am a sales rep with a very large territory that involves alot of driving and need extensive information with me on the go so I don't have to haul a laptop around (price lists, customer contact lists & notes, as well as possible simple spreadsheet applications and access to email.) After reading reviews on the 3 devices, I like this unit the most, the only big thing that concerns me is durability - I am very rough on my equipment, and when I felt this unit in the store the sliding keyboard as well as the big screen looked quite... vunerable, not only to breaking but wear and tear. As well, I am not familliar with the manufacturer, only knowing that anyone I know who has had an audiovox phone would never buy from them again. Ater having yours in constant use for a few months, going through all the wear and tear, how is everything holding up, and how well do you think it would last in an environment like mine compared with the other two?

Posted by Bill (email) on 4/23/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi Bill,

After long use, my unit is still in good shape. Keyboard feels like it is loose, even when you first touch the brand new unit, but it is actually pretty sturdy.

Also, as a rule of thumb, I always use two items:

1. Screen protector.
2. Proper case.

If you keep your device in its case with a screen protector, it will last you a lot long time. I wouldn't recommend Treo, as it is rather old and it is not a good investment (see above). Blackberrys are solid and sturdy, but you cannot access/edit spreadsheets, and other things easily and it is very limited on storage, whereas with 6700 you can simply pop in a 1GB mini sd card/s and you have unlimited storage (7250 is only 32Mb. if I recall correctly).

Even after getting a new Jamin, I switched back to 6700 after two days, as Jamin wasn't fast enough (CPU) and EVDO speeds is really better compared to EDGE.

Posted by Sems on 4/23/2006 3:00:00 AM

Forgot to add Bill. The unit is actually designed and manufactured by HTC and they are a well known company and their products are sturdy. They are used by HP, Imate, Dopod, Orange, T-Mobile and many others.

Posted by Sems on 4/23/2006 3:00:00 AM

Do you know if the device accepts a 2gb minisd card?
Thanks.

Posted by Cheralee (email) on 4/30/2006 3:00:00 AM

Technically, I don't see why not, as I have used 2GB SD (not mini-sd, but still) on a Windows Mobile 5 device just fine. I have been using 1gb mini-sd on the device currently.

I am looking to buy one of these 6700's through at&t so that it will be compatible with european Gsm systems when I travel -- Has anyone used this device in Europe yet?
Also wanted to make sure that if the battery dies it retains its memory -- not like my sony palm.

Posted by dave (email) on 5/7/2006 3:00:00 AM

I just looked at one of these beside a Treo 650 and even with the contrast turned to the top, display seemed washedout under bright lights. Didn't go outside to compare them. Is is screen res, windows, or am i missing something?

Posted by ken (email) on 5/9/2006 3:00:00 AM

Sorry for late replies, I was on vacation.

Dave, this device is a CDMA device, so it will not work on GSM networks, or most of Europe (I believe some Eastern European countries use CDMA like parts of Russia). The one you saw at AT&T is a similar device, probably a HTC wizard design. And yes device has a non-volatile memory, so when battery dies, you won't lose a thing.

Ken screen is 320x240, it works fine both inside and outside, as it is transreflective. I am assuming you mean brightness settings, since there is no contrast settings. Was the backlight on?

Posted by Sems on 5/13/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thanks for all the posts... this information has helped me to decide between Starcomm 6700 pocket PC and the palm treo. I learned several things here that other sites had not mentioned.

When you are out of wifi area do you think there might be an adaptor availble for dial-up internet access?

Posted by John (email) on 6/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

If you are not under wifi coverage, you can always use 1x/EVDO data connection. If you mean by "wifi" the evdo/1x, you can use a Bluetooth modem, that will hook up to a regular phone line and use dialup internet. There a 56K Bluetooth modem adapters for this.

Hello

I have a few questions... I currently own an iPaq 3850 (Pocket PC 2002) AND a small cell phone (LG - Telus). Could the 6700 completely replace both devices?

About WiFi connection, does this mean that I can connect this device to my wireless network at home? If so, does this type of connection also count for the download limit your plan states?

Thanks a lot for your answers.
Guy

Posted by GuyLaRochelle (email) on 6/5/2006 3:00:00 AM

Yes, it sure can. One device to carry, faster connections (as it supports EVDO) and up to date OS are also pluses.

As for Wifi, yes you can connect to your home network, and no, only EVDO/1X connections count towards your limit. They not only have no way of knowing how much data you used via Wifi, plus it is not through their network.

Posted by Sems on 6/7/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thanks for your input! I was looking at getting a 6700 for use as a real estate agent! I already have a great laptop(Dell XPS 170) that I was planning on using but if I can get a decent phone that does all that, then I can keep the laptop in the office and use it to transfer between home and office!

Hi,

Where can I get ringtones for the UTStarcom?

Posted by Mohammed (email) on 6/26/2006 3:00:00 AM

It can use midi or mp3 files, so you can find them almost anywhere on the net.

Posted by Sems on 6/26/2006 3:00:00 AM

I am in the prcess of finding new phones for our office staff, and I am comparing the 6700 with the Treo 650. The question I have, does the 6700 have the abilety of using remote desktop over WIFI to gain control of another PC(Server). Our company database is not MS Mobile 5.0 compatible were-as it is with PALM OS. If the 6700 would have this abilety then I would get the best of both worlds. I thank you in advance.

Posted by Ryan on 7/10/2006 3:00:00 AM

With a 6700, you can use the Terminal Services Client built into the device and connect to your Windows boxes (you'll need to enable the Remote Desktop on the Windows machines).

I use it all the time, to manage servers and such.

Posted by Sems on 7/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

That's great, thanks for the input. Now can this be done over WIFI local area only, or can I do this over the internet also? Thanks again!

Posted by Ryan on 7/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

Depends on your network/firewall setup. It can technically be done through both. At work I first VPN in (I use Bluefire Mobile Security VPN client, works well with our Cisco 3000). At home, I use a direct connection. I used both Wifi and EVDO/1xRTT.

Posted by Sems on 7/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

Fantastic, I very much apprechiate you input, and this site has helped me tremendously in making a decision. Cheers

I am actually going to purchase this phone but i just wanted to now what the sound quality was like as as the function for MSN Messenger? The main reason for wanting to get this phone is because i think it will help me become more PC suave

Posted by Jessica on 7/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi Jessica,

The sound quality is excellent. Unlike many other Pocket PC Phone Edition devices, it is not low and works great. Also I have tried several Bluetooth headsets, they were excellent too.

As for the MSN Messenger, it is built into the OS, so it comes with the device, along with support for Hotmail. You can check your Hotmail messages and chat on the go, and the keyboard is a time saver.

Posted by Sems on 7/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hello,

Love this UTstarcom pocketpc/cellular phone. It's functionality is absolutly incredible. It is my PC away from work, and also a fantastic second brain for memory when it comes to appointment and reminders.

However, in it's practicality and convenience of usage, there is to my opinion two downfall:
A) Screen can not be seen in a bright day
B) Hope one day soon Bluetooth and Microsoft can get together to make the Voice Command program compatible to Bluetooth. I've got to say this, calling an individual, client,or insurer from this phone can be a challange while driving. Voice Command makes this a breeze, but unfortunatly Bluetooth does not function with this program, yes you can talk through your ear set, but you can't give a command though the ear set.

Hopefully one day soon, the program and Bluetooth will be compatible, so it will make it safe to call someone by simply stating : -Call John Doe or -Dial #

Otherwise this UT Starcom is highly praised by this guy

Sincerely

Paul Vezina CAIB

Posted by Paul Vezina (email) on 7/13/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi Paul,

Why don't you use the built-in voice command software (both Telus and Bell versions has one), it works like a charm with Bluetooth.

Posted by Sems on 7/13/2006 3:00:00 AM

Just a comment on the above. I purchased my UT starcom a month and a half or so ago and can say I am nothing but pleased and have found information to the contrary regarding voice command and bluetooth compatability.

I regularly use microsoft voice command via a plantronics bluetooth headet.I set it up actually two weeks ago and it works fine. Microsoft does not support the softwares usage with bluetooth but by no means does it make it not possible.

Download "tweak2k2" AFTER getting all applicable updates. The updates can be large (mine were) and will likely reformat your unit. Tweak2k2 was the best thing you can get for your unit... or any PDA for that matter. I paid the 15 dollars or so for it as did what I wanted to for it. Its a simple registery editor that is very user friendly and allows you the ability to change various settings that the WM5 won't usually allow you to change. Including a check box to activate voice command for voice usage over the headset. In the program that you get under "tweaks" you go to "Phone tricks" and you get a check list that includes a check box for voice command for voice dialing. Enable it and the registry will allow the feature to work with your headset. Just hold the button on your headet down for about two seconds and voice command will kick in over your headet for about 10 or so seconds. Long enough to say " call fred" or "dial XXX-XXX-XXXX" with virtually no glitches at all thus far. I can also enable my media player although I cannot hear it over my headset I have it connected to rca inputs via the headphone jack in my car. So I can control it over my headset now (although the stereo better be down when I talk to it)

You can also make the bluetooth headset work with voice command by hacking the registry. However by doing this I found that it glitched up more and just did not cooperate so much. To perform the hack you do as follows.
The fix is a registry hack on your PPC (this is WM5 ONLY):

1. Install MS Voice Command and check working correctly.
2. Install BT headset and check working correctly.
3. Use a Windows Mobile registry editor (Google it - there are a few out there to try) and goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand\Path". Change the default value from "\WINDOWS\sddialer.exe" to "\Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe". Now you should be able to activate Micrsoft Voice Command by pressing the connect button on your bluetooth headset. To reverse this - reverse the instructions.

I performed the hack and downloaded tweak instead. It seemed to work better for me. The only difference in the end was that the media player will not play over your headset unless you perform the hack. MP3's sound terrible over the headset anyways.

Choose one and run with it. Either way I strongly reccomend tweak as per yet another reason.

OEM's like to hide a GPS setting on your UT starcom. I have my GPS running Tom Tom... But others have other applications that require a GPS. The problem tends to be that the com ports don't cooperate with WM5. Certain service providers lock the windows software to make your unit "more stable". Take the check box out of "hide gps" under "security" in tweak2k2 and go to your settings/connections and you will now see a gps there. you can now control your gps com port no matter what your oem intended. Tom Tom was very com port specific. Now it runs on com port 0 all thanks to tweak2k2.

Do a google search for tweak2k2 you will not be dissapointed.

Also strongly reccomend at least a gig for the mini sd card. Also install voice command to the unit not the card to increase speed.

Cheers,
Jason

I have had my UT Starcom for a couple of weeks now and am slowly getting it tweaked to my specific needs.

Last night I started to sync my ACT contact manager database using a demo version of Compainion link. I have over 3000 contacts (+notes & history etc...) and my device stopped syncing (transfering) after about 70% of the contacts were imported due to Critically low memory resources.

I obviously need to get a mini sd card.

A couple of questions:

1) How do I remove the ACT db files?

2) What Synch program do you recommend to synch ACT and handheld?

3)What is the largest mini sd card available?

Other than these few "getting to know your device issues" this is a great unit.

Thanks

Greg

Posted by Greg Belanger (email) on 7/24/2006 3:00:00 AM

1. You can use a utility like SkUtils (www.pocketgear.com), and it has an option to empty your pda databases, including contacts.

2. Never used ACT, so can't help there.

3. I believe 2GB is the max, with a decent price. 4GB ones aren't out widely yet.

I have successfully installed Skype on my 6700. The problem I can't figure out is that Skype only wants to go online using the cellular connection. I can't get it to operate on the Wi-Fi connection. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

I am buying a used [2 months'> Starcom 6700 that is Alltel provided. I am a Verizon user. How do I unlock the 6700 and then find activation codes for Verizon [actually replacing a verizon phone with the 6700'>?

Posted by Jim (email) on 7/28/2006 3:00:00 AM

Most CDMA providers are not willing to provide unlock codes, unless they really have to. You'll have to contact Alltel and see if you can get the code. Also many of them will not be willing to activate a phone from a different provider on their network, especially when they provide the same phone (this is Verizon's case).

So you might be stuck with a Pocket PC, without phone. Good luck...

Posted by Sems on 7/28/2006 3:00:00 AM

Jim,

Is your wifi connection set to connect to Work or The Internet. If it is set to connect to Work, set it to The Internet and see if that helps.

Posted by Sems on 7/28/2006 3:00:00 AM

What about websites that provide unlock service? Does anyone have experience with them? I bought an unlocked Verizon phone last year and found activation codes on their website. if I get the 6700 unlocked would I be able to have it activated through Verizon's website? Thanks

Posted by Jim (email) on 7/29/2006 3:00:00 AM

Most experience I have is with GSM unlocking, sorry I haven't used any services for CDMA unlocking.

Other than voice, are there any features that don't work through the 802.11 connection? I want to make sure i don't have to pay $15+/MB for 1X/EVDO data, will email, web, voip, etc work over wi-fi or are there some limitations?

Posted by andre (email) on 8/7/2006 3:00:00 AM

Technically, the device comes EVDO enabled and if you don't get any data plans, you'll be paying as you go data pricing, you'll have to be careful. There is no limitations on 802.11 connection, as it is connected through a your network, so Telus (or whoever) has no control over it.

I just got a Starcom 6700 and I have to say it's great but the ringtones on it SUCKS big time can anyone tell me how I can add my own ringtones on there since telus dont carry any for it....thankx Seon

Posted by Seon (email) on 8/11/2006 3:00:00 AM

Shawn, you can get an unlimited data with a cheap voice package, if you don't need too many minutes. There is not much any user can do, as it is a matter of personal choice/budget.

Seon, you can download or create your own mp3 or midi files. Just copy them via Active Sync to your device and select them from your Phone options. You can check the manual for further info.

I got it 8 days ago. I love it. I dropped it yesterday and I have some scratches. ANyone know if u can buy face plates?

Posted by az (email) on 8/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

Check www.pocketpctechs.com, they might be able to help you. I don't know if the faceplate is replacable though. A rule of thumb is always to use a screen protector (I use write shield from www.pocketpctechs.com) and a good case.

Hey Guys, Can I connect to another ISP (i.e. Bell dialup) through this phone.

Thankx

Posted by Nadeem (email) on 8/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

Nadeem, why would you want to use dialup, when you can use 1X or EVDO speeds?

In any case to my knowledge, Telus does not allow dialup/fax connections, but I might be wrong.

I had my heart set on a Treo, but the Wifi of this unit convinced me to go with the 6700 -- the thought of making VOIP calls is very sexy. The thing is i'm a Mac user, so getting used to windows is a horrible, horrible experience (i forgot how awful MS is...oh lordy) and worse, i fear there is no way to sync my powerbook up with this thing, which might be the reason to return it for a Treo (Telus has a 30 day return policy, thankfully).

Any hints on how to do this? I might be able to get used to the MS OS (did i mention how awful windows is?)...but if it won't sync with a Mac, it's nearly useless (my mac is a G4, not intel).

--

I'm also having trouble connecting to our home wifi -- it keeps telling me the network "key" (which i assume is our wifi password) is wrong, and i can't connect. irritating.

Thanks to those who post answers on this board, you've been very helpful already.

Posted by Shawn (email) on 8/25/2006 3:00:00 AM

Shawn,

You can sync a Pocket PC device with Mac OS, have you checked The Missing Sync

What is your wifi access point (brand/model)? Are you using WEP or WPA? Do you have any MAC address filtering? Did you try to turn off the security on access point and try?

Email me at sems at sems dot org if you want...

Posted by Sems on 8/25/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thanks Sems. I did check missing sync -- it doesn't explicitly say their software works with UTstarcom...it seems to work with the Sprint version...but when i click on this model, it says "not available". would the sprint version work just as well on this telus model?

Irritatingly, the software for the sprint version only works with Tiger, not Panther, which i have. it seems out of wack to change your OS so your mobile unit can work...buying the upgrade suddenly makes a simple purchase more expensive.

i'll check on the wifi -- we use an airport/apple network in the house. i didn't set it up, but we did whatever one does to make it work when it comes out of the box.

the woes of the technological middle class....thanks again for your help!

Posted by Shawn (email) on 8/26/2006 3:00:00 AM

The provider does not matter UTStarcom 6700 (aka HTC Apache) is the same unit hardware. The only difference between Sprint and Telus versions (or any other provider's) is the additional applications, settings (such as favorites, themes). They are the same unit, so it should work.

Missing Sync is not the only solution. There are others, just search Google. For example another option is Pocket MacPocket Mac, which works with Panther, unfortunately, Windows Mobile 5 support is expected soon.

Another method is to use a virtual machine, such as Guest PC.

Upgrading your OS might be a good idea, since it brings so many new features. However, check if all your critical apps will work fine on the new version before doing so. I know it is expensive, but the OS has lots of new features, it was worth it for me. Another thing to keep in mind newer OS usually has higher computer requirements, if you are low on RAM especially, you may want to hold off upgrading.

Good luck :)

I am seriously thinking about the 6700 but need to know if it is a viable replacement for my laptop. At present, as a sales person I am on the road a lot and access my desktop PC via my laptop and local Wi-Fi Hotspots. Can I access my remote desktop via the 6700?

Posted by Mark on 9/8/2006 3:00:00 AM

Mark,

There is a built in Remote Desktop client on the Windows Mobile Devices. However, the screen resolution being 240x320, it might prove to be troublesome. It boils down to what you are trying to access on your desktop. If it is just downloading some files, there maybe alternative software solutions, like a SSH or FTP server.

I use Idokorro Mobile Admin, as well as a SSH server to access the desktop. Idokorro allows many administrative tasks, like managing services, running command line apps, etc. and it has a Windows Mobile client. As for the SSH, I use Pocket TTY and I use it to create tunnel between the desktop and Pocket PC. Then I can access the command line, run VNC or access any remote service behind our firewall using port forwarding (see http://www.bitvise.com/port-forwarding.html, it will give you ideas about what I am talking about.)

Hi All,
I'm thinking about getting the 6700 for Telus Mobility, but really only need it for a phone plus PIM features. I dont want to get a data plan and dont want to pay any money for any of their pay per use service. I have a wireless router in my house and would like to access my email for free using wifi. Is there any way I can make sure that my phone never uses their data and only uses wifi? also would i have to only use webmail to check my email with wifi, or can I use the email client in the phone to connect and check using wifi without charging me.

any suggestions/help?

please email me directly

thanks

Shayan,

If your friend has the programming/unlock code for his Telus and Bell is willing to accept a foreign device, it will be fine.

Tony,

I have not seen any versions of Simply Accounting for Windows Mobile devices. Your alternative might be to remotely access your PC and use the Simply Accounting installed there from your device.

Paul,

One option would be removing the default Internet connection, dialing #777 from the registry. This way, it will never make a data call. Both built-in Outlook client and the Internet Explorer can use the Wifi connection to connect to the net.

I am thinking of getting the UT Starcomm 6700 and am wondering if I can use such programs such as EMEDIC on it as I am an EMT and this programs has lots of information for us to use on the street

Posted by Luci (email) on 9/29/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi All,

Have been using the UTStarcom 6700 from Telus for about 5 months now. I love the device. I moved over after 5 years with Palm. I must confess that once I learned the differences between the 2 op systems, WM5 is much more powerful and intuitive for my usage.

Quick question. My reminders suddenly quit working. I use Pocket Informant and also have Agendus. The problem seems to be happening with both. My other alarms work with no problem. It only seems that my meeting reminders will not function anymore. Anyone else having or have had the same problem? Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks in advance .... Ed R.

Posted by Ed R (email) on 9/29/2006 3:00:00 AM

Luci,

UTStarcom 6700 is a Windows Mobile 5 device, so if the Emedic runs on Windows Mobile 5 or Pocket PC 2003 OS, it should be fine.

Ed,

Did you try clearing your calendar data fully, then add a new entry and see if the alarm comes on? There are utilities, such as SKTools that would allow you to clear your PIM databases. Also another idea is to backup the unit (I use SPB Backup from SPB Software House), then hard reset and see if the calendar is working. This will ensure you don't have any hardware related issues.

Posted by Sems on 9/29/2006 3:00:00 AM

Luci,

I checked the Emedic site and it should work just fine.

Posted by Sems on 9/29/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi Sems,

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try clearing out my calendar data and the problem still persisted.

I then followed your suggestion by backing up the unit, performing a hard reset and then with the bare bones in place trying out the reminder notification. It worked!

I then restored my backup, deleted Pocket Informant my PIM of choice and tested out reminders again with the default WM5 PIM. Now it did not work.

This tells me that I have a software conflict. This means I will have to do another hard reset and then load my programs on one at a time until I find the culprit.

Once again, thanks for the suggestion.

Ed

Posted by Ed on 10/3/2006 3:00:00 AM

Not a problem. Yes, some apps can create problems. It is most likely a PIM related app is causing the issue (or it can be anything that alters alarms, such as Phone Alarm. I'd suggest installing first possibly harmless ones, like media players, games, graphic viewers, browsers, etc. Then backup and proceed one or two at a time. It is time consuming, but will nail the issue :)

Posted by Sems on 10/3/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hello All,

I've had my 6700 since March 2006 (accidentally put my awesome little LG125 through the washing machine). I must chime in and say it is an excellent pocket PC. Not the greatest phone but the tradeoff is worth it.

Pro's:
Large colour screen
Windows Mobile 5 - packed full of features
Wifi works flawlessly
EVDO works flawlessly (more on this later)
Browser works great but some intensive sites won't render properly.
Slide out keyboard is so easy to use - even for a large fingered person like me.
Surprisingly Robust - it takes a beating & keeps working where dumber phones would give up.
Functions as an Internet connection for your laptop via EVDO

The coolest thing about the phone is the Terminal services client that lets you remote control your PC. You can also get versions of VNC (which I have) if you need that.

The second coolest yet most useful thing about the phone is it can act as an internet connection for your laptop in an EVDO accessible area. I worked 24/7 for 5 months (Apr through Aug) @ 60hrs/week and on call for data intensive applications. I was able to access the internet with my laptop FROM Kinbrook provincial park AND Dickson Dam/Glennifer Lake so I could enjoy a weekend camping/seadooing yet still connect to my clients network and manage intensive processes. The only hiccup here is that I had to shell out an extra $5 to Telus to give me a public IP and not hide me behind their firewall. Our VPN software wouldn't work properly with the Telus network firewall.

This phone is VERY robust - more robust than any other phone I've had (except for possibly my LG125). My 6700 has hit the ground several times and only has nicks/scratches. Try that with a motorola or nokia and it's DEAD within 2 drops to the floor - either antenna or power circuitry is shot. Also, My 6700 has survived a trip to the bottom of the toilet thanks to my 1.5yr old son. Fully submerged and waterlogged, i yanked out the battery and let it air dry for a day or two and it was fine. I hope not to find out if it will survive a 2nd trip.

Con's:
It is very bulky in comparison to my old LG but that is to be expected. I find that it gets caught on EVERYTHING.

The stylus is a little too loose in it's holster.

It is a little quieter than most phones - I have difficulties hearing sometimes.

The vibrate is too weak for the phone case.

Off the shelf battery life his horrible.

If your contacts list is big and you are dialing a number a dropdown box will sometimes slide down and cover the dialing pad - software fault, not the phone itself but still agrivating.

The call/hangup buttons are a little too sensitive. It will sometimes re-dial the last number if I have it in my pocket.

The carrying case protects it very well but doesn't clip on as secure as I'd like.

There is a bug with the backlight - I have mine in a state where it won't stay on when plugged into a power source. Also, sometimes it won't turn the backlight on - even if I click the screen or hit the power button. It forces me to squint at the dark screen & navigate to the backlight settings and toggle the "turn on backlight when a button is pressed" setting for it to work again. I still can't get the backlight to come on when it is plugged in. It wasn't always this way.

I couldn't get the VITO Remote Control software to work with the IR port - no errors or anything but it didn't seem to work with my TV OR it wasn't working at all. Has anyone had success with using this to remote control your entertainment units?
http://www.vitotechnology.com/en/products/remote.html

Anyway, I love my UTStarcom 6700 and wouldn't go back to a regular cell phone again although I do miss their simplicity and textured buttons for dialing without looking.

Hey wdup yu'all I've had my "baby" UTStarcom 6700 on Telus Mobility. I have to say it the BEST product i've ever bought since my early days of ScotPage Pagers. I'm coming from the Tungsten E Palm and trust me the Windows 5.0 is Greater!!!
the only problem i have is I cant remember my password for the Syncronization and even when I re-install the disk on my pc it seems to be storing the password INSIDE the UTStarcom...any1 else have a prob like this?..any suggestions on fixing it. Please also email the solutions to StarKingRic@hotmail.com
Thanks in advance I know you'all are brainerz

Posted by Rixter (email) on 10/7/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hey Rixter,

If you are refering to the password you have setup on your device, if you don't remember it, the only way to get rid of it is a hard reset. Check the manual on how to do a hard reset.

Posted by Sems on 10/9/2006 3:00:00 AM

I bought the UT Starcom and everything is going fine with the exception that when I use active sync my notes come up with an error, doesn't say what just "attention required" any ideas

Posted by Luci (email) on 10/10/2006 3:00:00 AM

Luci,

The error is related with a conflict between the notes on your device and on Outlook. Couple of solutions:

1. Disconnect the device, soft reset it. Connect it back to the desktop and see if sync goes through. If error still happens, you can right click on the notes and select resolve (in your desktop ActiveSync)

2. If the above don't help, disconnect, open Outlook, create a new folder (from Files menu), select storing for Notes items (default is mail), go to your Notes, select everything (you can click on a note and hit Ctrl-A to speed up the process), cut and paste to new folder. Connect the device back and let it sync. Then copy and paste back your notes from the new folder to notes. Let it sync again. Once sync is complete, you can check your notes for any duplicates.

Posted by Sems on 10/10/2006 3:00:00 AM

To all those who are wondering about syncing with a Mac, "The Missing Sync" does indeed support that synchronization with both Entourage/Outlook and with the Apple apps (address book, ical). Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 5 (MSWM5) is currently available but requires Tiger on the Mac (OS X 10.4). I use it successfully with a verizon/ut Starcomm xv6700 in both usb and bluetooth. Version 3.0 is currently in Beta (I'm a Beta tester) which will also let you sync music and photos. I'd wait for 3.0 to be released publicly, probably very shortly, before buying for the xv6700. MSWM5 does exactly what you would expect for all of the automated syncing capabilities, and I get no money for saying so.

Posted by JoeB (email) on 10/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

On the UT Starcomm (verizon) xv6700 there is a chip slot under the battery. any idea what that can be used for?

Posted by JoeB (email) on 10/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hey Joe,

On my Telus one, I have a slot, but it has no pins/connectors, so it has no use. Does the Verizon one have connectors?

Posted by Sems on 10/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

Does anybody have trouble sending mail from either their POP or IMAP emails on the device?

I have two different accounts, one is POP and one IMAP, neither require authentication, but when i send a message, it will end up in the draft file, and my inbox will get an "invalid message recipients" message. and sometimes that will come with a pop up message that says "mail cannot be recieved" but that's not true, i do get to recieve mail.

I have tried through the telus network, as well as turning on the wifi and using our home Rogers account w/ proper authentification password and etc...and it never sends.

Apart from upgrading my G4 to Tiger so i can finally sync it with Missing Sync (^thanks for tip, joe) this sending problem is the last hurdle in making this device work fine. Anyone else get this?

--

After a month of using it, my only major complaint is the crappy ear piece. any noise on the street and i can hardly hear whoever i'm talking to. why is it so hard to make a speaker with proper volumn? the included ear phones help of course but the built in thing should at least be usable too.

Posted by Shawn (email) on 10/20/2006 3:00:00 AM

Some ISPs, including Rogers Hispeed blocks SMTP port 25. This might be the case for you. Then alternatives are using a different SMTP port, if one provided by your mail provider or use Telus's SMTP server.

Alternatively, you can use Nakka's Npop, which is a POP3 client and will help you to understand the issue better.

Posted by Sems on 10/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thanks. Ya, i figured some ISP's do block (same as using a laptop at various hotspots), but even using the Telus Network, that bypasses a local ISP, it won't send my mail (and i've tried the range of smtp servers i use for my handful of email accounts). Telus mobility doesn't seem to provide a smtp server -- at least i couldn't see it on their website. Npop explained the issues fine, but i've tried those solutions already.

...scared to go into a Telus store and discuss this with a teenager who will have no idea how to solve this, but confidently offer me new ringtones...

Posted by Shawn (email) on 10/22/2006 3:00:00 AM

Sems, I can't thank you enough; this thread has been an amazing help to me in deciding to purchase the UT Starcom and in getting used to it over the last week. One question (and I think I have done a fair amount of websearching to ask this) is whether or not there are any programs that can make ringtones louder. I'm using mp3s right now, but even at the highest volume, usually can't hear my phone at all.

Thoughts?

Posted by Chris (email) on 10/30/2006 3:00:00 AM

You are most welcome. Have you tried a software like MP3Gain, it increases the volume of MP3 files. That should do the trick.

I recently purchased my 6700 from Telus. I've been familiarizing myself with it, but I've seem to have 'lost' my Today page. Whenever I select 'today' I end up with whatever the last option was I was using, beit the phone, email, excel etc. Can you tell me how to get the today page back?

Thanks,

Posted by Vance (email) on 11/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi Vance,

Never seen such an issue before. Did you try to soft reset the device? How about setting one of the buttons to go to Today (you can set it up under Settings)?

Posted by Sems on 11/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

Damn you're fast! The soft reset worked. I was afraid to try it. The last time I did that was the first day I had it and my Starcom locked up - I had to have the unit replaced. Telus did it for me no problem... Thanks for the quick response Sems.

Posted by Vance (email) on 11/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

One more question for you... I'm left handed. Is there any way to get the scroll bar onto the left side of the screen? It would be a lot easier to use that way for us southpaws.

Thanks,

Posted by Vance (email) on 11/1/2006 3:00:00 AM

I think you are mixing soft and hard reset, soft reset, done via pushing the reset button on the bottom via stylus, should not lock up anything. In any case, I am glad your problem is solved :)

I have seen some apps for Palm, but none for Windows Mobile devices so far. I'll let you know if I find any.

How exactly do you perform a "hard reset" on the 6700?? I need to wipe it clean.

Hey guys ive had the utstarcom for approx 3 weeks now and its great however theirs one problem the voice volume and ringer volume i find it to be extremly low does anyone know how to make the ringer and voice volume louder?

Posted by P.SINGH (email) on 11/4/2006 3:00:00 AM

John, what is the properties of the movie, like resolution, fps, format (Windows Media 9, 8, etc). The performance is well dependent on all these.

Evino, you can use Clear Storage app in Programs or:

To perform a hard reset :
Press and hold both SOFT KEYS on the device. Keep these keys pressed, and at the
same time, use the stylus to lightly press and hold the RESET button on the left side of
your device. Press either Y to restore to factory default or N to exit the hard reset process.

(see the manual for more info)

P.Singh, i assume you have increased the ringer volume to the max? if so, you can try to use a mp3 ringtone and increase its volume using a mp3 utility on your desktop. As for the voice volume, you can use the volume buttons during a call to max it as well.

Posted by Sems on 11/5/2006 2:00:00 AM

Thanks for your prompt response. Being the dummy I am, I just referred to the owner's manual to do the hard reset, and it worked fine. Thanks again!

Posted by Evino Martinez (email) on 11/8/2006 3:00:00 AM

No worries, I hardly read the manuals myself ;) Glad to help.

Posted by Sems on 11/8/2006 3:00:00 AM

I've yet to be able to customize ringtones. I have the Verizon service version of the phone, should that info be important to have directions given to me. The PDA file of the instructions say to sync up with Windows Media Player 10 and then copy the files you want as ringtones to the Windows/Ringtones folder of the device. The rings folder doen't seem to be accessible though. I can see it on the list of device folders, but the most I can do with it is highlight the rings folder on the list. I've seen interfaces that I can purchase to make this easier, but if it is possible to get the rings without an additional purchase then I'd like to do it that way. Thanks for the help.

Love my UTStarCom (telus). I am in Europe at the moment, the phone does not work here. Anyone know if it can be arranged, ..........and how?

Posted by frank on 11/14/2006 3:00:00 AM

There is no GSM support in the 6700, so your only option is to use CDMA. There is very few countries supporting CDMA in Europe, I think Russia is one of them. Your best bet is to rent a phone or if you have a GSM phone, get a prepaid card.

Posted by Sems on 11/16/2006 3:00:00 AM

for those worried about breaking it, take a look at some of the cases you can get on e-bay. I got the aluminum case and it's great.. practically indestructible. Now I can just throw the thing in a backpack or pocket without worrying about it. Got extra styluses and noname brand batteries too - they were just as good as the original battery if not better, and 500x cheaper.

Use mine for all sorts of data purposes and it saves me a lot of driving time when I'm on-call (i'm a network admin). And I use it for GPS with pocket streets, etc etc.

My only complaint about the unit is the phone quality and reception - wow it's terrible.. and I can't get PPTP or IPSEC VPN to work. I see you can get a public IP though in a comment above, might try that.

Posted by josh on 11/24/2006 3:00:00 AM

Josh,

There are third party VPN clients, the built-in one is a piece of c**p. Try http://www.bluefiresecurity.com/products/vpn/

It works great with my company's Cisco 3000.

Posted by Sems on 11/26/2006 3:00:00 AM

I've had my xv6700 from verizon about a month and love it. I haven't added any additional software to it yet but do have a 512Mb mini-sd in the slot most of the time for some docs and mp3 files. I have the ppc lockup (won't power on) several times a week. When this happens it won't receive phone calls either. Doing a soft reset always brings it back, but sometimes...not always, an alarm or reminder will be ringing as if the ppc just realizes it missed something. Another method that sometimes wakes it back up is to pop out the mini sd, although I hesitate to do this as one time it caused my files to become unreadable. Settings/memory/storage card showed space in use but I was unable to see any file names with explorer. I was able to reformat my card with my PC and put the files back onto the card but still have the same issue. I have googled xv6700 lockups and have read the same complaint from numerous users but haven't found a solution. Is this a WM5 issue? Do other brand devices behave the same way?
Thanks, you have a super informative site.

Posted by dave on 11/27/2006 3:00:00 AM

Sorry, just read my post and realized I was unclear in my last one. After formating my card and copying the files back to it that problem was fixed. By having the same issue I mean the device fails to power back on.

Posted by dave on 11/27/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hey Dave,

Of all the WM5 devices I used (Kjam, Jamin, Tytn, 6700, Treo 700vx, Treo 750v and more), I never had such an issue. So it is definitely a WM5 generic issue. Out of curiosity, did you have anything that was running from mini-sd constantly, like a Today plugin, etc? Most today plugins work better with main memory.

Ive had my Starcom since it launched and had to take the upgrade that included voice dailing. That was good and i dropped it a few weeks ago and now have a new replacement and noticed that the lastest models come with the upgrade but i was wondering where i can get some programs for this thing without paying $20.00 from telus's software store even if its a few games or maps or anything i;m not sure where to look? Also i wanted to comment if some people are un aware that when you use alot of the programs on your phone that it does not close them even if you have closed the window. You may see other programs not responding and or running slow to fix this.

Go Into you Settings In the Start Menu
Click on the System Tab
Open Memory
Click on Running Programs
Choose to close the ones you are not using at the moment or stop all to "clean the slate"

Hope this helps the people like me out there ;-p

Any help on games or any download sites would be great!

Thanks and what a great site!

If you are looking for free software, there is plenty of freeware for Windows Mobile, take a look at http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php

It is a good starting point. Also take a look at http://www.vieka.com/vbar.htm, it is a small freeware that really closes the app when you hit X.

I've been using a Plantronics Bluetooth headset with great results - BUT I appear to have lost my mike and speaker on my Starcom. Even with the Bluetooth turned off nothing works. In order to answer the phone I need to make sure I've my headset connected. I can no longer create voice tags, hear alarms, music etc. Is there anything I'm missing or should I try a hard reset. Soft reset didn't rectify.

Thanks,
Vance

Vance,

Try removing the headset pairing from the Bluetooth Settings first. See if that would help.

Posted by Sems on 12/12/2006 3:00:00 AM

Sems,

That didn't seem to make any difference. I removed the pairing, did a soft reset, but still no mike or speaker on the unit itself. Shouldn't I be able to use the unit with a bluetooth and (if headset turned off)use the built in capabilities as well?

Getting frustrated... :)

Thanks,

Hey there,

Your site really helped me decide on my recent purchase of the UTStarcom 7600 over the Palm Treo 700wx. Thanks!

I've had it for 3 days now and while I consider myself somewhat tech savvy, I am having some trouble figuring out the email settings and am hoping you can help. I am using Outlook 2002 SP3 on my PC and have set up 2 POP3 accounts accordingly on the Device and performed a sync with the contacts and first emails working out. However, it seems I lost a few emails from my PC inbox when I deleted them from the 6700 after the sync??

Other questions.

1. When I download mail from my POP3 account to the device, then sync it with my PC outlook, the messages from the POP3 on the device don't seem to transfer over to my inbox on my PC even though its accessing the same POP3 account.

2. Is there a way of moving email on the device from the POP3 to the Outlook Mail and if so, will that make the messages downloaded onto the device from my POP3 account accessible and sync up in my PC inbox?

3. I cant seem to send from the device. I entered the same incoming and outgoing info as on my PC. I have 2 POP3 accounts set up but neither will send (they both receive). Not sure if either account requires an SSL connection. Do I start with calling Telus or my ISP?

4. Can I set up a WiFi connection to my work that is using an encryption method of WPA-PSK, type TKIP?

Looking forward to confirming that my choice over the 700wx was a good one ;)

Syncing POP3 accounts with Outlook is prone to be troublesome. First of all, are both of the Pocket and Desktop Outlook to set to keep messages on the server or what? Is your Outlook on your desktop running all the time?

My suggestion would be to use Outlook and Pocket Outlook separately and do not sync the emails.

Or a better idea would be to use Nakka Npop (http://www.nakka.com/soft/npop/index_eng.html) as pop3 client on your Pocket PC, set it "leave messages on the server", and you can set the Outlook on desktop to delete them.

POP3 protocol is not really designed to handle multiple places accessing the emails, if you can why don't you use IMAP4?

For sending the messages, Telus might be blocking port 25 and you might have to use their SMTP server to send out. Or if your email provider provides an alternative port such as 587 on their server (Rogers or myhosting.com does for example), use that.

Yet another idea is to move to use an Exchange Server, you can get a free account at live.mail2web.com to see. mail2web.com also provides paid Exchange accounts and more features, from simple POP3 to IMAP4 to full Outlook MAPI access, depending your needs. All of the accounts, including the free ones, support ActiveSync without any additional cost.

You should be able to setup wifi with tkip, though I cannot guarantee, as I don't use a 6700 any more and never set up the wifi on it to use tkip.

Posted by Sems on 12/15/2006 3:00:00 AM

Vance, that's how it is supposed to be, when bluetooth is on and a paired headset is found, sound should go through it and if else, sound should go through the unit.

It seems like something in your device registry is messed up. I don't what exactly to look for, so it is hard to tell. Did you try to use a 2.5 mm wired headset and see what happens? Also I am presuming you have checked your sound/volume level?

Posted by Sems on 12/15/2006 3:00:00 AM

Sems, I bit the bullet and did a hard reset. That resolved the problem. Now I just have to reload everything...

Thanks for all your help. You've been great!

I just got the unit today from Telus and am on the $90 Voice and Data package.

I'm having bad experiences though with data speeds.....

The unit is slow.....I have a palm TX and use my home wifi signal and pages load quickly....but the evdo speeds and wifi speeds are the same and are about as slow as my "web browsing" on my old cell phone!!!

Anyone know why I'm having this problem???

Posted by Bobby (email) on 12/18/2006 3:00:00 AM

Hi there
Just got the utstarcom 6700 and noticed that there isn't a sim card in behind the battery. Could it be a problem or is that what telus does before you activate it meaning that they install one when you activate it? Had it sent to me but it's got no contract as of yet as I have to go in and get it done.

Posted by matt (email) on 12/18/2006 3:00:00 AM

Vance,

Here is couple of future suggestions:

1. Invest in a good backup util, I use SpbBackup. When I have stable config, I back it up. It creates self-extracting restore files to your memory card, very easy to use and restore after a hard reset

2. Keep a copy of the cab files for the software you installed, make sure they are marked as read-only, as by default, when you run a cab file and install, WM5 will delete the file. I can reinstall everything with this trick in less than an hour.

Bobby. depending upon your location, you may actually be using 1x, not evdo, make sure you have the EV icon on the top. Regardless to that, if even wifi is slow, you might have an issue with the unit. Did you try any speedtest sites, such as www.dslreports.com/mspeed

Matt as far as I know, the sim card location under the 6700 is currently mostly cosmetic. There is no actual connection to the circuit board. You can not use a GSM sim card in there. And Telus will not supply one for 6700 either.

Posted by Sems on 12/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

So, does this mean at a future date I couldn't switch to another service provider if I'm not happy with Telus? I do really like bell mobility service, really never had a problem with them. Don't know about Telus much.

matt

Posted by matt (email) on 12/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

Okay so I figured that my EVDO speed problem was due to the area I was in.....

However, my WiFi speed is still slow. I have my Palm TX in my house and surfing speeds are fast. When I use the Telus supplied 6700 the page stays at "locating" for a minute then it moves to "opening" and then it slowly downloads the page for another minute.

The unit is brand new....have I overlooked any settings? Does anyone else have this problem with the WiFi? I'm wondering if Telus has capped it through some software so that it forces users to use the EVDO network all the time????

Posted by Bobby (email) on 12/19/2006 3:00:00 AM

Matt, you can switch providers at any time, but if you are under a contract, there may be penalties, plus with CDMA providers, it isn't as easy as with GSM. They may not allow you to use devices from other network providers, people had variety of results.

Try the speed test web sites, and then we can compare, right now you are simply talking about from user experience, couple of speed tests would give us better ideas. Also, it might be your DNS settings, causing a lag. Try reaching a site with its IP and see if it makes any difference. For example my site is http://168.144.4.141

I am considering buying a Telus UT 6700 or Blackberry or other such device. I know nothing...and have never used a Palm or Blackberry.

I travel for work anywhere from 1 to 8 days a month (business consultant). I use email as primary contact with most clients. I will only be using the device on travel days , rarely when at home. I would like to be able to open attachments.

I have the feeling the UT6700 is what I need, but I don't know about plans. I don't plan on using the unit daily, or as a toy. I will do minimal web surfing, mostly emails and calls on travel days. Can this work with a plan that has only 0.5 gig? What about spam...does it use up all of your gigs? Does surfing use up gigs? As you can see I really know nothing...I would appreciate any input.

Posted by line (email) on 12/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

Sems....thanks for the advise. It really helped!

One other question. I messed up as I thought the UTStarcom 6700 came with a PDF viewer but it does not. Do you, or anyone, know of a PDF viewer I can download (free or not) that will work in this device? It's running Windows Mobile 5

thx..

Posted by Dave (email) on 12/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

Line, anything using the data connection, such as transferring emails, surfing the web will eat your data limits. However, by default Activesync will download only 0.5 Kb of each message and you can then download the rest, if needed. With heavy email usage I usually end up using around 50Mb tops, so 0.5Gb (or 500Mb) will be plenty. Just keep an eye on the usage of the web, as with lots of big pages around, you can easily use lots of megabytes. My fav application is SPB Gprs Monitor (works with CDMA connections too, no worries) and it will track your daily usage for you. Between Treo 700WX and 6700, I love Treo much better, as it fits to my hand much better, I like the keyboard being easier to access. But a 240x240 resolution (treo) vs 240x320 (6700) might make a big difference for some. I'd suggest checking both units.

Dave, check outhttp://pocketxpdf.sourceforge.net/ and http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=19594, one is free, one is $24.95

Posted by Sems on 12/21/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thanks Sems,

Looking at the plan again, I realized that I made a mistake in my question (it was really late at night)...the plans I was looking at offer O,5 MB (not gig), 1.0 MB or 30 MB...what can you do with one megabyte in a month...I won't be doing much surfing with it, and don't want to overbuy...

Also you mentioned the TREO and 6700, are they both a better option than Blackberry? The more I read, the more confused I get...

Thanks again for your help.

Posted by line (email) on 12/22/2006 3:00:00 AM

Line,

0.5 Mb or 1Mb. is way too little, even for emails. Think about it like this. If you get 2 Kb emails on average, 500 emails will easily use up the 1Mb. My suggestion is to for a month get a bigger plan, as plan overusage will cost you much more. After the first month you can adjust your plan according to your needs.

As for Windows Mobile vs Blackberry (Treo 700WX and UTStarcomm 6700 are both WM, as you know), it is more of a personal choice. Both provide some great functionality. But I prefer a touch screen, which Blackberry devices lack, plus to me Windows Mobile devices are more powerful, provides more functionality, till Blackberry Pearl, you wouldn't be able to listen to MP3s. Windows Mobile devices can do that for long time, as well as supporting video, internet telephony, gps, games and much wider software library. Let me rephrase it this way, personally I'd not buy a Blackberry device, if I didn't have to have one (required by my work).

Posted by Sems on 12/22/2006 3:00:00 AM

Thank you so much for all of your advice and help, I am finally beginning to see the light. I think I will be going with the UtStarcomm 6700, I like the keyboard...

Sems - really enjoyed reading through the many Q&A's. bought my 6700 in July because of this site. Can you recommend a freeware firewall and some basic steps and settings for wifi security. Also have you found switching off activeX on 2tweak2 imobilizes text messaging? thx!

Posted by peter (email) on 12/25/2006 3:00:00 AM

Well, I don't know any free firewall software for Windows Mobile devices, but I really think it is an overkill. There is not much of any remotely accessible services are running on it, unlike a PC. As for wifi security, if your router supports it, use WPA, if not turn on 128 bit WEP encryption at least and you should be good to go. Even though WEP encryption is hackable, it will take some long time before anyone can do so and provides decent protection. There is plenty of unprotected wifi networks out there and they get hackers attention first anyways. I haven't turned off activex, so can't help you there much. I wonder if text messaging is using some activex control for its functionality. You can contact tweaks2k2 author and see what he says, he is very responsive. I contacted him several times in the past.

I've had my PPC 6700 since August and despite many issues (mostly related to an improper activation) I like the unit very much.
However, I purchased a Motorola HT820 Stereo Headset while traveling last week and had no luck in getting it to work completely well.
I was able to use it for phone conversation but couldn't listen to music using the Windows Media Player. The only time I had a hint of music was when I tried to use it for voice dialing using the integrated Voice Dial feature.
Do any of you know whether this particular unit (or any other unit) will work for both listening to music and for phone conversations?
I did some research on the web but the only lead I found was to wonder whether this unit supports A2DP.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. I would love to be able to listen to my music with the option of switching temporarily to answer phone calls.

Bob

Posted by Bob (email) on 12/28/2006 3:00:00 AM

I believe with the latest upgrade to the OS, the A2DP support came in. If not, there is a hack, which also works on 6700.

See http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/519433-post10.html

As well as:

Make sure to get the Telus version :)

Hi there

The lad at the Telus store told me there was a way to edit the registry and change the 1.3MP camera to 2.0 capabilities, any truth to this?

Also, I just want to thank you answering all these questions, its come quite handy.

Posted by alexfromottawa (email) on 1/1/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi Alex

To my knowledge, there is no such hack, you are limited with device's optical capabilities, which is 1.3MP

Posted by Sems on 1/1/2007 3:00:00 AM

I just got home with my 6700! So far so good, just getting used to it!!

Is there anyway possible to share multiple contacts through my Razr bluetooth to the 6700, or do I have to continue to do it individually?

Posted by Alex Labreque on 1/2/2007 3:00:00 AM

Sorry, in continuation to last question, when I'm on msn mobile messenger, how do i make it so i dont sign out after a period of time? thank you again! :)

best of the new year

Posted by Alex Labreque (email) on 1/3/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi Alex,

1. I believe you'll have to do one by one. An easier method would be to use a Razr Sync cable and Motorola's (on any other third party's) software to transfer all the contacts to Outlook and then use ActiveSync to transfer to 6700.

2. As for the MSN, I don't have my 6700 on me (it is at work, I use a Treo 750v daily, which doesn't have MSN messenger on it, I use the IM+ instead), I don't recall any specific settings. I'll check and post tomorrow, maybe I can find a registry setting or sth.

I have the UTStarcomm 6700 on the Telus Network here in Canada....I'm still experiencing slow wi-fi speeds. I've tried the unit at many wi-fi spots including the one I have at home (which works perfectly with my Palm TX).

The 6700 has no problems detecting the wi-fi signals and connects to them quickly. However surfing is very slow.

I went to DSLreports.com and tapped the 100K file. The results came back as:

62 kbit/sec
1.153s latency
13.88s d/l time.

So what does this mean? I'm sure that my unit isn't surfing at 62kb/s!!! I've gone to simple mobile websites such as palm's mobile portal and it takes at least a minute to load!!! Whereas on my palm TX it took 1 second!!!!

I even put IP's in the address bar instead of the actual urls and it still loads slow....

Please any suggestions? I love this device....I just want to get the full use out of it! Thank you

Posted by Bobby (email) on 1/4/2007 3:00:00 AM

100 Kb is a little too small to test a wifi output. You should try something like 1Mb. Also try some other sites, to see if it makes any difference.

Also did you apply the latest patch from UTStarcom site for Telus. It might resolve the problem.

Posted by Sems on 1/7/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi.....I bought the UTStarcom back in Sept through a telus retail outlet. The young guy that sold it to me didnt know anything about it and the box didn't come with instructions, for whatever reason. I have been muddling through trying to figure things out. I took it back to the store and asked a couple of questions and got very little help.

He downloaded EVDS for me, and he also changed the notification on the phone, so that I no longer get pop ups telling me what wifi networks are available. It seemed before, I was automatically connecting to them, but now I dont know how to check to see if there are any networks available and how to connect to them..i have tried searching through the help topics and played around with it myself. But haven't been successful.. any advice would be great... thanks

Please I have problems with my UT 6700. When a try to sync the phone with my pc, sometimes my pc does not detect the device, cuould someone tell me why?? What can I do??

Posted by LUIS ALCINA (email) on 1/11/2007 3:00:00 AM

Elizabeth,

http://www.telusmobility.com/on/business_solutions/support_utstarcom_6700.shtml is a good starting point. I'd suggest reading the user guide.

Start reading from page 80, where wifi connection and how to connect is explained in details.

Luis,

1. Which operating system are you running on? XP?
2. Did you try using a different USB port?
3. Do you have the latest ActiveSync (4.2) installed?
4. When the issue happens, did you try resetting the phone?

Posted by Sems on 1/12/2007 3:00:00 AM

Elizabeth,

Thank you for your repply,
1. Yes OS is XP
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Yes

The strange thing is that if I keep triying (plugging in and out the USB cable) eventually it will detect the phone and sync...

Luis from Venezuela

Lol Luis, it was me, Sems, who posted, I was just replying back to 2 persons with one reply :)

1. Are you having any issues with any other USB devices?
2. It could be defective cable. Any chance to try a different one?
3. I don't know your tech level, but another idea is to try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. If you need help with it, let me know.

Posted by Sems on 1/12/2007 3:00:00 AM

In response to the Telus man who turned off the wireless network automatic pop up, how is that possible.

Also, is it posisble to remove the message sent, after sending text messages?

Posted by Ottawa Labreque on 1/14/2007 3:00:00 AM

You can turn off the automatic pop up easily. When it finds the new networks and pop up comes, click the Menu (or use the right soft key), there you'll see the option to disable it.

There is a registry hack for the SMS sent notifications.

First download and install Resco Explorer from resco-net.com site, then follow:

1. Select Start and open Resco Registry app
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox
3. Enter Inbox, select Menu –> File, New Key
4. Name the New Key as “Settings”
5. Click on “Settings” and select Menu –> File, New String Value
6. On “Value name:”, enter in SMSNoSentMsg and in value data “String”, enter 1
7. Soft reset your device and test by sending an SMS, the confirmation message should not display.

Lately it seems that when I leave my utstarcom sitting idle, it goes into some sort of sleep mode, and is only responsive to the button on top.

Isn't it possible to make it always ready to go when I touch the screen?

Posted by rodney januk on 1/21/2007 3:00:00 AM

My fantasy football site has a window for gametime stat updating. My 6700 will not refresh this page, it still has zeros for all players even if I reboot IE during the game. All other parts of the site work fine. Also have a friend who cannot get past the login screen for his hockey pool on his 6700. I am an Apple person, so all this PC stuff is greek to me. Is the problem with the machine or the user?

Posted by Bob Cecill (email) on 1/21/2007 3:00:00 AM

Bob,

It is neither, it is the websites. They may not be designed for Pocket Internet Explorer. You can try couple of other things:

1. Get a different browser. Minimo (free) and Netfront are good browsers.

2. Change Pocket Internet Explorer's settings. The Javascript might be disabled for example, which is generally required for screen to refresh automatically.

Rodney,

Under Settings, there is an option to lock the device and turn itself on only with power button (useful to prevent accidentally turning on the device in your pocket), disable the option and see if that helps.

I installed my pocket pc software on my laptop a few weeks ago, but now i've upgraded to a new laptop, so my serial does not work.

what do i do, because now i am unable to synchornize

Hi Sam,

I downloaded the Bluefire VPN and it worked just fine. You need to run the exe file from the zip on your desktop. You can find installation instructions on the trial download pages - https://www.bluefiresecurity.com/downloads/popups/VPN_install.asp

Alex,

Your serial for what is not working?

Posted by Sems on 1/23/2007 3:00:00 AM

for pocket pc and outlook etc.

what do i do!

thanks :)

Posted by Alex Labreque (email) on 1/24/2007 3:00:00 AM

Alex,

It would be heck easier if you were a bit more specific. For one, Pocket PC does not require a serial number. For Outlook, the serial comes with its installation CD and it should work. If not, contact Microsoft or Telus support. I cannot provide you an Outlook serial (you have not even told which version, so I am assuming it Outlook 2002 that came with the device).

For other programs, unless a program is locked to your hardware, their respective serials should work. If not, again contact the software author.

I just got the UTstarcom 6700 and I really enjoy it. I was just wondering how I could load new ringtones onto the phone. I fallowed instructions in manual but it still wont work. Is there another way to do it?

Posted by Chris (email) on 1/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

I copy the mp3 files directly under \windows\ringtone on the device, using Active Sync and they work just fine.

Posted by Sems on 1/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

Sems, sorry about that...

I got a new computer, and since installing the software (including outlook 2002), my serial is not accepted (since I have already registered it on my old laptop)

Is there some way to de-register and then activate the new version on my new laptop?

Thanks

Posted by Alex Labreque (email) on 1/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

Technically, you are allowed to activate Outlook 2002 on two machines (like one laptop and one desktop). If you have used only one and activation is failing, you'll need to contact Microsoft and go through their support.

One last question I promise!

I have a certain folder on my computer with all my documents- is there a way to have that sync- and update on the memory card everytime I plug it in?

Thanks so much,

Posted by Alex Labreque (email) on 1/29/2007 3:00:00 AM

I got the 6700 a week ago. This is my first experience with Pocket PC. I have been using Palms since the first release, I even had the Sony UX-50 (which was the Roll Royce for Palms to the very day). The UT 6700 is definitely better than the Palm OS and features. However, you are now definitely more tied with Microsoft.

I don't know what is the problem but I am not able to get the wifi feature working. Wifi is turned on and all settings are outlined below. If anyone come across this problem before and have found fix for it please let me know.

My wireless network at my house is 802.11g, it is a SMC Wireless Router

The Wireless LAN Settings reads as follows:

Status: Connecte to network
SSID: SMC
Tx Rate: Auto
Mode Infrastructure
Channel: 1
BSSID: 00-04-E2-D3-71-CD
MAC: 00-09-2D-CF-D2-22
IP: 169.254.41.158
Signal Quality: (graphic bar = full {100%})

yet, when browser open navigate to any web site I get "Cannot Connet"

Alex,

MightySync - http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?programId=45&productId=32175 will do the folder sync trick for you. It can sync a folder to a memory card.

Alson,

IP: 169.254.41.158 - shows that you have not received a proper IP from your wireless router. Two things you can check are:

1. Make sure your DHCP server is on (on your router).
2. If you are not running DHCP, on your 6700, set your IP and DNS manually.

Joe,

SMS Cool from Aim Productions - http://www.aimproductions.be/ppc_catalogue_title.asp?Product_ID=128 will do the job.

Hi,
When I MS ActiveSync (4.1) my PPC 6700 (via cradle/USB) to my notebook PC, my wireless internet connection fails/disconnects. This means that I am unable to download/update my PPC 6700 applications that require updating online. Even when I cable connect my PC to my modem, my internet connection fails when I USB/cradle connect my PPC 6700. In other words, everytime I USB/cradle connect my PPC to my notebook, I lose my internet connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adrian

Posted by Adrian (email) on 2/2/2007 3:00:00 AM

Adrian,

Starting with Active Sync 4.x, the Windows Mobile devices are installed to your desktop as network cards and somehow it is causing a conflict on your machine. Try:

1. Upgrading to Active Sync 4.2
2. Updating your notebook's network drivers for wireless.

I'm on my third unit and it appears to be working well except for one 'small' item. On a regularly irregular basis the brightness drops to the bottom of the scale. I have to find an area with good lighting so I can see the screen and find my way to the backlight/brightness bar and drag the light back on. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to when it drops. This happened on my last unit as well. Any ideas??

Thanks,
Vance

I have used two different 6700s, one from Telus and one from Bell, neither had such a issue. Is there any software installed on the device? Did you try hard resetting the device, run it couple days like that and see if the issue repeats Vance?

HI,
I seem to be having a problem with my ut6700 not being seen by active sync I have tried all of my usb ports but nothing seems to happen. Is there anything else you can suggest I try ?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks,Kevin

Posted by Kevin E (email) on 2/22/2007 3:00:00 AM

Kevin, which operating system are you running? Did you try to reboot the computer and reset the 6700 and then try? How about another mini usb cable?

Posted by Sems on 2/22/2007 3:00:00 AM

Vance - I'm having the exact same brightness problem. Would love to find a solution too....

Posted by Barney (email) on 2/23/2007 3:00:00 AM

Vance and Barney, I am having the same brightness problem. Its was happening fresh out of the box with no software installed (except the activesync that came with the installation CD. So, it does seem to be a systematic problem.

I sell this device at a local retail outlet, and a customer asked me how to initiate a new Power Point application. I was able to bring up the folder, but there was no option of establishing a new template or slide. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Posted by Emily (email) on 2/25/2007 3:00:00 AM

Barney, Vance, and Jushumat,

Have you guys applied the latest firmware upgrade? What is your version numbers showing under About under Settings?

Emily,

The Powerpoint Mobile is essentially a viewer, you can view powerpoint slides created on your desktop, however, you cannot create new ones on your device.

I'm running version 5.0 OS 5.1.195 (Build 14928.2.2.0)

I had them upgrade to the latest firmware when I picked this replacement unit up. I was having this same issue with my previous unit as well. Thought it was just something I was doing wrong...

Thanks for your help.

There goes that idea :(, I am guessing their support was useless as well?

Posted by Sems on 2/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

this has probably already been asked but i could not find it. how do i get set my mp3 files as my ringtone! the guy at telus said that i could and for the life of me i can not figure it out! i can find the ring folder on the 6700 but not when i hook it up to my home PC.

Posted by kate (email) on 2/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

Kate,

You should be able to open ActiveSync when the device is hooked up to your PC and then use Explore option to see folders. Ring folder is under your device, Windows folder, as you probably know. Then simply drag and drop mp3 tones from your desktop into there.

i installed my bluetooth with bluesoleil software. whenever i try to sync them using bluetooth it says it cannot finding partnership with a pc that supports activesync. i have already created the partnership with the laptop

any suggestions?

Posted by alex on 2/28/2007 3:00:00 AM

Alex, threaded sms messages is a software developed by Palm. I think the Flexmail 2007 application from webis.net offers similar functionality, but it is not free.

Text messages, as the name suggests, are text only. You need to use multimedia messaging. To MMS messages, you can attach pictures.

Bluesoleil may not be supporting serial port profile required by Active Sync. Also did you check if, under your ActiveSync settings on laptop, bluetooth sync was enabled?

Posted by Sems on 3/1/2007 3:00:00 AM

Does anyone know how to export or copy text messages from the 6700 to your pc? Has anyone had to replace their screen - I just cracked mine. UTStarcom wants $200+ for a new one. Any help with this is much appreciated.

Posted by Anil on 3/2/2007 3:00:00 AM

Anil, do a little search on this page, exporting SMS was already discussed, SMS Cool should do the trick.

As for screen replacement, check with PocketPCTechs.com, they are the best in screen replacements/repairs. They also sell parts, should you wish to replace it yourself.

Posted by Sems on 3/3/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hey Sems, thanks for all of your information on the 6700, it's awesome. I know earlier in the posts you discussed the GPS settings being locked by verizon and to use a program called tweaks2k2, however I am a poor college student and don't have the money to pay for that program. I was wondering if you knew of any webpages that show what hex or registry files would need to edited and to what, to unlock the gps settings (or anything else that verizon may have locked). Any help would be great, thanks a lot.

-Brian

Posted by Brian (email) on 3/4/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hey Brian,

I don't have my 6700 on me to verify the exact keys, but
GPS settings under Control Panel can be unhidden by going into the registry and deleting any "Redirect" or "Hide" keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings usually.

Also, if that doesn't work, Tweaks2K2 runs as a trial full featured version, allowing you to run it 3 times, before asking for a key. So you can use it too.

Posted by Sems on 3/4/2007 3:00:00 AM

Thank you sems I will try that.

thanks again!

Posted by Alex Labreque (email) on 3/28/2007 3:00:00 AM

I got the program from XDA, and it installed, but when I open it up, I cannot enter anything in. I see the login and password screen but nothing I type shows up.

Thanks!

Posted by Alex Labreque on 3/28/2007 3:00:00 AM

Sorry Alex,

I never used Gmail on the PDA, so can't help you much there. It may not be designed to work with that Midlet Manager. However, as alternative, you can use Pocket Outlook and access Gmail via POP3. Instructions can be found on how to setup your email client on Gmail site.

Does anyone know if Windows Mobile 6 can be installed on the UT Starcom 6700?

Posted by JohnY (email) on 3/29/2007 3:00:00 AM

To my knowledge, there is no plans to release a Windows Mobile 6 update for 6700s, however, people are trying to port the beta releases for other devices to it. Take a look at Apache section at xda-developers.com forums.

Posted by Sems on 3/30/2007 3:00:00 AM

I am sure this question has been asked if I look through all of the posts. I am contemplating buying the 6700 through Telus. I will primarily use it to send and receive email when traveling and would like to receive and send through a wireless connection such as Hotspots or any other wireless available at hotels or at times just picking up any wireless signal. Is this PDA able to do this without going through Telus or is it part of what I pay through a Telus email/web package?

Posted by Tony Romeyn (email) on 4/3/2007 3:00:00 AM

The email/web package is for using their 1x/EVDO network for data transfers. For wifi, you don't pay anything to them (unless of course you are using one of their hotspots).

Sems, thanks for the last answer to my question. And thank you for your website, a GREAT service. All of this is news to me and a new learning phase. I have a Notebook computer which I take between home and work. Last night I spent two hours at home where I am using a wireless to my desktop computer, to connect to ActiveSync.Tried many settings and two different USB cables, nothing worked. I just arrived at my office and drop my Notebook into my network, hook up the USB cable and bingo ActiveSync kicked in immediately. Any suggestions? Tony

ps. I run a number of community websites; www.highwayoftears.ca - www.iammissing.ca - www.doorsofhope.com - www.stopchildabuse.ca - www.windowsofhope.ca

Hi Tony,

Glad to help and thanks for your comments. I'll checkout your sites.

As for ActiveSync, it can be a pain at times. For some reason 6700 created the most problems with ActiveSync, compared to my other devices.

Here is couple of suggestions:

1. Make sure to run latest version of ActiveSync (which is 4.5)
2. Reset 6700 before plugging in.
3. Try rebooting the notebook.
4. Try a different port.
5. Check Telus/UTStarcomm sites for the latest upgrades.

Posted by Sems on 4/6/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi Sems, thanks for the info, I upgraded my PC to 4.5 and finally found that my AVG firewall was blocking access. Does my mobile need the same upgrade to 4.5?
Thanks again, it is unusual for anyone to run a free service like yours which is very helpful.
Tony

Posted by Tony Romeyn (email) on 4/7/2007 3:00:00 AM

Hi Tony,

I just try to share info/help fellow users :)

The Active Sync 4.5 is for the desktop/PC. I don't know which version of firmware is installed to your device, but you can get the latest software for 6700 for Telus at:

http://www.telusmobility.ca/on/business_solutions/utstarcom_6700_upgrade.shtml

You can check your current version via:

Select Start > Settings

Under the System tab select Device Information

The following should be listed

ROM version: 2.09.20 WWE

Radio version: 1.14.00

ExtROM version: 2.09.701 WWE

If so, you have the latest, if not do the upgrade. Keep in mind, the software upgrade will wipe device contents, thus you'll have to reinstall your software, if you installed any third party software.

Love your site, lots of good info.
1) i'm haviing a problem with my storage card. My xv6700 (verizon) will no longer read the data that is on it. the programs that are on the sc won't run. settings/memory/storage card shows the right amount of data is still on the card, but File Explorer only shows a new folder called Inbox.mst298316..... with an empty folder called Mail Attachments in it. Any ideas what happened? And how to get the data back (even if I can't read it on this device)?
2) should i do the updates you mentioned (my phone is from verizon)? Thx.

Posted by Brian (email) on 4/16/2007 3:00:00 AM

Thanks for the kind comments

The folder you see is where your Pocket Outlook is storing attachments. Under Pocket Outlook options, you can set it to store to Main Memory or Storage Card.

With that said, you can try the following:

1. Soft reset the device, see if it helps.
2. Remove the card, soft reset, once reset is done, insert the card.
3. Insert the card to a card reader on a desktop PC. See if it can read the files/folders. If so, copy all of them to a folder, format the card, copy them back, sometimes format of a card can get corrupted.
4. Through Pocket Outlook, switch the attachment location to Main Memory, soft reset the device.

As for the updates, I'd recommend them, they bring fixes and features. You can find a copy for your Verizon phone from either utstarcom web site or Verizon. Do NOT use the Telus version on your phone, as it will create problems. Also keep in mind, the update will hard reset the phone, you'll need to reinstall your applications.

You'll have to contact your provider and they'll assist you with the code and how to program your phone.

Posted by Sems on 4/26/2007 3:00:00 AM

I asked UTSTARCOM's tech team if they were plannihg on offerring an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 for 6700 owners. I actually tried to find the original e-mail of their response and couldn't find it. But essentially they said that the 6700's hardware would NOT support an upgrade to WM6 and that it's not compatible. I'm not sure if that's really true or they were trying to get out of offering an upgrade. I understand that they are coming out with a new phone and that WM6 will be available for that model.

Cheers.

Posted by Tim L (email) on 6/6/2007 3:00:00 AM

i dont see why 6700 would be incompatible, it has enough rom space. With that said, it is an old unit and utstarcomm may be shying away from investment on it. But there are unofficial efforts to create a wm6 rom for it at xda-developers.com, i am hoping they will be successful.

You'll need to rely on a third party software called Missing Sync, but it works really great with Mac, so I foresee no troubles.

I used to sync 6700 with my Mac. Which OS version are you running, 10.4.9? I no longer have a 6700, but I might be able to give you some clues.

Also, what are you using to sync with? Missing Sync? What are you trying to sync? Calendar? Contacts? etc...

I recently purchased a 6700 from Verizon. Can you tell me
if there is a way to set it to only connect via wifi for internet usage?

Posted by Ruben (email) on 11/1/2007 3:00:00 AM

You can simply delete the registry key setting up its data connection to mobile network. I don't remember its exact location, but it is doable. You can simply add a new internet connection, make its same something unique. Then use Resco Registry Editor to search for the word. The other connection will be under the same registry tree.

Hey what's up. I just got a brand new replacement XV6700, and basically when my phone goes idle for 2-3 minutes my data connection/Agile Messenger logs out. My last 6700 didn't do that - it stayed connected all the time, unless I took a phone call. Is there anyway to set it back to staying connected even while idle? I really need that option back! Thanks...

Posted by ChrisReg (email) on 11/15/2007 3:00:00 AM

I know there exists a registry setting to keep a connection always on. You might find a tweak utility for it, like Tweaks2k2, or try this:

Go to registry key:

HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections\|gprs connection name|

Add new Dword value:

AlwaysOn = 1 (DWORD decimal)

You can use Total Commander (www.ghisler.com) which has a built in reg editor, or PHM Regedit (www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/RegEdit/)

It could be a defective unit. Try to call Alltel. Also make sure MSID and Phone number are set as 10 digit and same numbers.
