Disabling Spotlight in Mac OS X 10.5
Simply move
/System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
to a safe location (in case you want the Spotlight back) and reboot. This will prevent launchd starting
