Skype for Pocket PC enables you to use Skype on portable devices running the Microsoft® Windows Mobile® operating system. This guide describes how to:

●    Install Skype for Pocket PC

●    Configure Skype for Pocket PC

●    Use Skype for Pocket PC

 

Note: This guide provides information on configuring Skype for Pocket PC. Refer to the documentation provided by your device manufacturer and your network service provider for device- and service- related information.

Install Skype for Pocket PC

To install Skype for Pocket PC, use the following guidelines.

Environment requirements

Before you install Skype for Pocket PC, ensure that your system meets the following requirements:

Device and PC

To use Skype for Pocket PC, the device must meet the following minimum system requirements:

●    Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 or Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC

●    312MHz processor

Network

To function effectively, Skype for Pocket PC requires a high speed wireless Internet connection over a wireless (Wi-Fi) or 3G network. The procedures to configure Wi-Fi and 3G features vary for different devices and carriers, but are typically performed by tapping Start > Settings and selecting the Connections tab.

Information: Refer to your device and carrier documentation for specific configuration instructions.

Skype use over 3G data networks incurs data charges from your 3G service provider. On a Wi-Fi network or with an unlimited 3G data service, using Skype is usually free.

Installation options

You can install Skype for Pocket PC in one of the following ways:

●    Install from a desktop computer running Microsoft® ActiveSync®

●    Install directly onto the device “over the air” (an OTA installation)

Download the appropriate installation file from the Skype web site at http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile or at http://www.skype.com/go/mobile if downloading directly to the device.

If Skype for Pocket PC is already installed on the device refer to the section below for details of how to upgrade Skype.

Upgrading Skype

If a previous version of Skype for Pocket PC is already installed on the device please uninstall it before installing the new version.

Note: If your device came with Skype for Pocket PC pre-installed it may not be possible to uninstall it. If this is the case then please continue with the installation instructions in the following sections.

To uninstall older versions of Skype for Pocket PC do the following:

●    Select Start > Settings.

●    Select the System tab.

●    Tap the Remove Programs icon.

●    In the list of installed programs, select Skype Technologies S.A. Skype

●    Tap the Remove button.

●    Select Yes to uninstall Skype for Pocket PC.

After you uninstall the previous version, follow the standard procedures to install the latest version of Skype for Pocket PC.

Install from a desktop PC

To install Skype for Pocket PC with a desktop computer, the computer must be running Microsoft® ActiveSync® and be able to connect to the device. If Microsoft ActiveSync is not provided on a software CD with the device, download the latest version from the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.

Before you begin

After verifying that ActiveSync is installed, connect the device to the desktop computer using the cradle or USB cable supplied with the device. ActiveSync also supports other connection types, such as Bluetooth.

Information: Refer to the ActiveSync and device documentation for instructions on connecting the device to the desktop computer and for installation and configuration guidelines.

Installation

To install Skype for Pocket PC, perform the following tasks:

●    In an Internet browser, navigate to the Skype for Pocket PC web site.

●    Select the manufacturer of your Pocket PC device and then select the relevant model.

●    In the Download via your Windows PC panel, click the Get it now button.

●    Click the Download button and in the File Download window click the Run button to download Skype for Pocket PC. Alternatively, you can save the installation program to disk and run the program manually afterwards.

●    When the download is complete, a security warning is displayed in your browser window. Click the Run button to start the installation.

●    Follow the instructions in the Skype for Pocket PC setup application. After the download is complete, check the device screen to see if additional steps are required to be completed on the device and then click OK.

●    The Skype for Pocket PC installation program will run on the device automatically.

●    When the installation is complete, check that it was successful and then tap ok to close the installation window.

Install over the air

To install Skype for Pocket PC over the air, the mobile device must have a current Internet connection, via Wi-Fi, 3G, or a wired connection.

Note: Skype recommends that you do not install using GPRS which will take significantly longer because of its relatively low speed.

Before you begin

Verify that the device is connected to the Internet.

Information: Refer to the device documentation for instructions on connecting the device to the Internet.

Installing Skype

To install Skype for Pocket PC, perform the following tasks:

●    In an Internet browser, navigate to the Skype for Pocket PC web site.

●    Select the manufacturer of your Pocket PC device and then select the relevant model.

●    In the Download direct to Pocket PC panel, tap the Get it now button.

●    Tap the Download button to start the download.

●    In the Download window ensure that the Open file after download checkbox is ticked and then tap the Yes button. Alternatively, you can tap the Save As button to save the installation program to memory on the device and run the installation program manually afterwards.

●    The Skype for Pocket PC installation program will automatically run on the device.

●    When the installation is complete, check that it was successful and then tap ok to close the installation window.

Verifying the installation

To verify that Skype for Pocket PC is correctly installed on the device:

●    Select Start > Programs.

●    Tap the Skype icon.

●    If this is the first time that Skype for Pocket PC has been run on the device, Skype will display the End User Licence Agreement (EULA).

●    You must read the EULA and tap the Accept button at the bottom to continue.

●    Skype will display the welcome screen. The next step is to configure Skype for Pocket PC as described in the following section.

Configuring Skype for Pocket PC

The procedure to set up Skype for Pocket PC varies depending on whether you are a new user or an existing user.

Configuring a new user

If you do not have a Skype account, perform the following tasks:

●    Tap the Create New Skype Account button.

●    Enter a Skype name which must be a minimum of six characters.

●    Enter a password of at least four characters and then repeat the password to confirm it.

●    Enter your email address. If you forget your password in the future, Skype will email your password to this address.

●    Tick the checkbox which confirms that you have read and accept the Skype End User Licence Agreement (EULA).

●    Tap the OK button to create a new Skype account and sign in.

●    When you are signed in, Skype for Pocket PC displays the Contacts tab.

 

Note: If the Skype name you chose is already in use, repeat the account setup procedure using a different name.

Configuring an existing user

If you already have a Skype account, perform the following tasks:

●    Enter your Skype name.

●    Enter your password.

●    Tick or clear the Sign in automatically on start checkbox, according to your preference.

●    Tap the Sign in button.

●    When you are signed in, Skype for Pocket PC displays the Contacts tab.

Configuration options

To configure the Skype for Pocket PC settings:

●    Select Menu > Settings.

●    Select the language to use for Skype for Pocket PC from the Language drop-down menu.

●    Set the Emoticons entry to Disabled, Enabled or Animated.

●    Tick or clear the echo cancellation and standby mode checkboxes according to your preference.

●    Select who to allow calls, messages and SkypeIn from in the Calls, Allow messages and SkypeIn drop-down menus.

●    Tick or clear the Send unanswered calls and Forward calls checkboxes and set the Forward calls number according to your preference.

●    Tap the OK button.

 

Note: Skype recommends that you set Echo cancellation to ON to avoid issues with voice quality on calls.

Using Skype for Pocket PC

This section describes how to use Skype for Pocket PC and contains the following information:

Skype calls

On a Wi-Fi network or with an unlimited 3G data service, calls between Skype users are usually free. Skype also offers the following subscription services for a small fee:

●    A SkypeOut subscription allows you to make calls to traditional phones and mobiles from Skype.

●    A SkypeIn subscription gives you a phone number with which you can receive landline and mobile calls using Skype.

●    A Skype Voicemail subscription allows you to send and receive voicemail using Skype.

User interface

The main window for Skype for Pocket PC includes a tab bar, a text box and a menu.

The tab bar has five permanent tabs for:

●    Status

●    Contacts

●    Dial

●    Chats

●    History

Select any tab by tapping its icon on the tab bar. Skype automatically adds a Call tab when you make or receive calls.

Status tab

The Status tab shows your online status along with the current status of your account, including new or missed events and information about your SkypeOut, VoiceMail and SkypeIn subscriptions.

Contacts tab

The Contacts tab lists Skype users and phone numbers (for SkypeOut calls) you have added to your contacts list. It displays the current online status of each user, and allows you to manage your contacts.

Dial tab

The Dial tab displays a numeric keypad for you to tap SkypeOut phone numbers and to interact with touch tone telephone services.

Chats tab

The Chats tab displays a list of active chats. You can open an active chat, set the chat topic, leave a chat and add or view chat participants.

History tab

The History tab displays a history of calls made and received using your Pocket PC.

Text box

The text box is located beneath the tab bar where you can type a Skype contact name or a phone number for SkypeOut calls. Tapping the arrow to the right of the text box displays recently called names and numbers. If you select a name, Skype adds it to the text box.

Menu

The Skype for Pocket PC main menu contains two sections. The upper section of the menu changes dynamically to provide access to options relating to the current selection. The lower section does not change and contains the following options:

●    Add a Contact to add known contacts.

●    Search for Skype Users to search for other Skype users based on selection criteria.

●    Settings for configuring Skype for Pocket PC (described earlier in the Configuration settings section).

●    About Skype to provide information about the running version of Skype for Pocket PC.

●    Sign Out to end your Skype session.

●    Quit to close (as opposed to minimise) the Skype application.

Online status

Use the online status drop-down menu towards the top of the Status tab to change your online status. The status icon displays your current status at all times. Online status can be one of the following:

●    Offline – you are not currently signed in to Skype.

●    Online – you are ready to make and receive calls or chat messages. Your status will be set to Online automatically when you sign in.

●    Skype Me – temporarily disables your privacy settings and allows everyone on Skype to contact you.

●    Away – indicates that you are online but away from your Pocket PC.

●    Not available – indicates that you are online but currently not available.

●    Do not Disturb –indicates that you are busy. Skype will not notify you of incoming calls or chat, although a Call tab is added to the tab bar when a call is received.

●    Invisible – allows you to remain online while others see you as offline.

Managing calls

There are a number of ways to make calls with Skype for Pocket PC. To place a call, do any of the following:

●    Select a contact on the Contacts tab and tap the Call icon on the contact entry.

●    Tap and hold a contact on the Contacts tab and select Start call from the pop-up menu.

●    Select a contact on the Contacts tab, select Menu > Start call and then select Skype, Home, Office or Mobile.

●    Select a contact on the History tab and tap Call or press the Call soft key.

●    Tap and hold a contact on the History tab and select Call from the pop-up menu.

●    Enter or select a name or number (for SkypeOut calls) in the text box and tap Call or press the Call soft key.

When you place a call, Skype for Pocket PC adds a Call tab to the tab bar. The Call tab shows the status of the call.

When you receive a call, Skype for Pocket PC adds a Call tab to the tab bar. To answer the call, tap Answer or press the Answer soft key.

During a call, Call options are available via the main menu. Use these menu options to perform the following call functions:

●    Place the call on hold.

●    Mute the call.

●    Show the caller’s profile.

●    Add the caller to your contacts.

Alternatively, tap the Call tab and use the popup icon list to manage the call.

To terminate a call, tap Hang up, press the Hang up soft key, or select the hang up icon from the popup icon list.

Conference calls

Skype for Pocket PC allows you to participate in conference calls started by other Skype users. When you are invited to join a conference, Skype adds a Call tab to the tab bar. To join the conference, tap Answer or press the Answer soft key. You cannot start a conference call using Skype for Pocket PC.

Managing chats

There are a number of ways to start chat sessions with Skype for Pocket PC. To start a chat session, do any of the following:

●    Select a contact on the Contacts tab and tap the Chat icon on the contact entry.

●    Tap and hold a contact on the Contacts tab and select Start Chat from the pop-up menu.

●    Select a contact on the Contacts tab and then select Menu > Start Chat.

●    Tap and hold a contact on the History tab and select Start Chat from the pop-up menu.

After a chat session starts, Skype displays a chat window where you can enter and send text messages and see the history of the chat session. During the chat session, enter chat messages into the chat text box and tap the Send button (similar to the Enter key on a computer keyboard) to send the message.

Just above the Send button are two smaller buttons you can use to add common text or emoticons to the message. To edit the list of common text, select Edit Templates from the bottom of the common text menu.

To create a chat session with multiple participants select Add Participants from the main menu to invite additional contacts to the current session.

To close the chat window, click ok. To leave a chat session, tap and hold the chat entry on the Chats tab and select Leave from the pop-up menu.

Managing contacts

A contact is any Skype user you allow to talk or chat with you, or a SkypeOut number. Use Skype’s privacy features to decide who can and cannot contact you.

Known contacts

If you know the Skype name of a contact to add, perform the following tasks:

●    Select Add a Contact from the main menu.

●    Type the Skype name of the contact in the Look for entry of the Add a Contact window and then tap the Search button.

●    Tap Add To Contacts or press the Add To Contacts soft key.

●    In the Say Hello! window, type a message to introduce yourself, select whether or not to share your contact details and then tap the OK button.

●    Tap ok to close the search window.

 

Alternatively, to add a SkypeOut contact, perform the following tasks:

 

●    Select Add a Contact from the main menu.

●    Tap the Add a SkypeOut contact button.

●    Enter a name and the phone number in the Add a SkypeOut contact window and then tap the Add Number button.

 

The new contact will appear on the Contacts tab. If the user authorises you to see online status, the Contacts tab displays the current status for the user.

Unknown contacts

If you do not know the Skype name of a user you want to add to your contacts list, perform the following tasks:

●    Select Search for Skype Users from the main menu.

●    Type a name in the Look for entry of the Search for Skype Users window, optionally specify search criterion using the remaining fields and then tap the Search button.

●    After a short delay, Skype for Pocket PC displays a list of Skype users that match your search details.

●    Select the Skype name you want to add to your contacts, optionally tap and hold the entry and select Show Profile to view the profile for the user and then Tap Add To Contacts or press the Add To Contacts soft key.

●    In the Say Hello! window, type a message to introduce yourself, select whether or not to share your contact details and then tap the OK button.

●    Tap ok to close the search window.

Authorising contacts

When a user requests to add you to a contact list, Skype for Pocket PC displays an authorisation request link on the Status tab. Select the link to respond to the request:

●    Allow - authorise this user to see your online status.

●    Don’t allow - prevent this user from seeing your online status.

●    Block - Prevent this user from communicating with you.

Existing contacts

To manage existing contacts, perform the following tasks:

Tap and hold a contact on the contacts tab to make a call, start a chat session or to leave a voicemail. You can also:

●    View the contact’s profile.

●    Rename the contact.

●    Remove the contact.

●    Block the contact.

●    Request authorisation.

If your contacts list is large, you can use the quick search facility to find a contact quickly and easily. Enter a letter into the text box to view only those contacts whose first or family names begin with that letter.

Using history

The History tab displays call history, including the date and duration of each call. Tap and hold an entry to:

●    Call the user.

●    Start a chat session with the user.

●    Leave a voicemail for the user (for users who subscribe to Skype voicemail).

●    Delete the history entry.

●    Show the profile for the user.

●    Add the user to your contacts list.

●    Block the user.

●    Clear the call history.

Device integration

You can answer Skype calls and receive chat messages on your mobile device while Skype for Pocket PC is running in the background.

If you receive a Skype call while you are using another application on your device, an Incoming Call notification bubble appears. Use the notification bubble to answer or reject the call.

If your Pocket PC device is running Pocket PC Phone Edition and you answer a regular (GSM) call during a Skype call, the Skype call will be placed on hold. You can swap back to the Skype call without ending the GSM call by tapping the Skype call icon on the status bar.

Skype for Pocket PC adds an entry to the menu in the Contacts application on the device. You can use this menu to make SkypeOut calls directly from the Contacts application, without switching to Skype.

To place a call from the Contacts application, do one of the following:

●    Tap and hold a contact and then select Call with Skype from the pop-up menu.

●    Select Call with Skype from the Menu menu to call the currently selected contact.
